Parents who are dominating or have authoritative style of parenting often have communication problems with their kids. such parents do not give the kid the freedom to speak or express and so the kid becomes withdrawn or has low self esteem. When talking to kids, parents should not go on and on but speak only few sentences so that the child can grasp and learn from it. Speaking too much makes the kids to tune out with the parents.
Most common mistake that parents make is nagging. Repeatedly saying same thing again and again causes kids to distance themselves. They don't seem to heed to what parents say so instead give short and clear directions.

While talking to kids, parents should think before saying anything cos if some harsh words escape their mouth, then it can do irreversible damage to the child's pysche. Parents need not criticize the kids as it can be detrimental to their development. Instead of saying something that demoralises the kids, parents should talk about motivating and encouraging them.
