Q: My daughter is in the 7th standard. She has suddenly started sucking her thumb again after a gap of six years. Why is she doing this? What are the possible reasons?
A: Thumb sucking is a way of self-comfort. However, it is a bit unusual to suddenly develop this habit at this age when she is in the sevent standard. You need to find out what she is going through and give her enough support. A problem in school or conflicts in the family might have triggered this. Unfortunately I can’t be of much help. You and your family members should sort this out. Wait and watch. You should be able to reason with her at this age. Explain that this is not the mature thing to do.
