Hi,

I am 30 weeks pregnant and I am diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I did the 3hr glucose tolerance test and my fasting and 1 hr test came out normal range.Fasting is 73 and 1 hr is 164. But my 2nd hr test result is 157 and the normal should be upto 154. and the 3rd hr is 142 and the normal should be upto 139. Dr. asked me to go for the diabetic education class and I will have to see endocrinologist after takin g the diabetic and nutrition class.. I would really appreciate if anyone can share their experience with the diabetic class and also how to control this gestational diabetes.. I used to have lots of juices and all, i guess that increased my sugar level.. Now, i have completely stopped taking juices and also am having chappathi instead of rice... I am also walking 45 min daily.. Also, pls tell me how to test with glucometer... I am wondering if my test result always come in the normal range if i self test with glucometer since my fasting and 1 hr are well within the range. Pls reply me.

Dont worry. You seem to be on border line GD. In the diabetes education class,they will explain you about the meal plans that you need take. You will be allowed to take 45g of carbs for breakfast,lunch and dinner. Snacks should include 30 gms.
They will explain you how to use glucometer in the class.

Here are some tips which will help you:
1. Eat small quantities. spread out your food intake throughout the day.
2. Include protein food in your diet. If you are non vegetarian you can try to have eggs, chicken etc.
3. walk for 20-30 min after each meal, which will help you in managing your sugar levels.

I am also diagnosed with border line GD and my levels are always under control because I make sure I include protein in my diet. In fact my after meals are always below 110.
