Do whales fascinate you? Do you think it is permissible to kill whales for their commercial value? Do you think the ban on whaling should be relaxed?

Ahh point taken, but conservation and arms don't mix. What you say is true but an utopian dream. Its like saying that all countries go for 100% disarmament and spend the money on conservation and eco friendly drives. Won't happen in any political arena. Hasn't happened since man invented the spear I think... But yes we need more funds and focus for conservation drives, probably people shouldnt be so materialsitc... do away with things like lipsticks go au naturale

Dont know about whales, but you can hire boats to see dolphins in Goa. It is a spectacular sight to see them jumping and diving around you.

interesing question. i m sure whales must be found around India, as occassionally they get wahed up on beaches (dead or alive. maybe they are not found commonly enough for people to go out in boats to find them. may be they find the waters around here too hot?

btw the so called " whale shark" that is commonly trapped in fishing nets (especially around the coasts in Gujarat) are not really whales. they are actually a species of sharks (which means they are fishes, not mammals). However, just like whales, the " wahle shark" is also a gentle giant that does not pose a threat to humans.

i have heard that even lipsticks are made from whale fat. this should be stopped. we must protect whales. lets find other substitutes. scientists should be researching all this rather than finding new bombs or wepaons.

I mean that we need to shift the focus from destruction to conservation. obviously whales and bombs are different. Are you a dumbo to suggest that?! Resources are few and so we must prioritise. If countries continue to put arms and such on top of the lists, who will look at these poor animals?

Don´ t know how bombs came into the picture, the conomics and psychology of the bomb is entirely different from animal conservation. Yes we need to save whales, we need to stop poaching and perhaps have whale wild life preserves.

Do you think it is possible that whales might be related to the elephant? Both are mammals, and both are the largest animals of their realm.

Hi Rusi, size is not an important criteria for ascertaining taxonomic relationships.

Whales and elephants are not closely related, though interestingly manatees and dugongs, which are another group of sea mammals are related to elephants. Both dugongs and manatees, like elephants are herbivorous, unlike whales which are carnivorous.
