Aviation history might seem heroic...the conquest of the skies and all that. No doubt it is an achievement, but today the avaition industry is not quite environmentally friendly due to the fuel consumption.
Unless you are flying across continents, or time is a critical issue, flying is best avoided.

On what basis can it be claimed that the avaiation industry is a polluter. While generally planes may consume large amount of fuel, the overall consumption, on a world wide basis, may be minor compared to that used by automobiles and other road vehicles (and we are talking only of transpot here.)Compare this with other forms of industrial maufacturing consumption and the avaiation industry can hardly be blamed for the world environmental problem.

In the US airports operate on a hub and spoke model. There airplanes are like the trains that we use here. In fact the number of people traveling by train in the US is less as compared to those by train.

Why can't we have both. Bring airfare down so more people can fly and increase the no. of flights on congested sectors.

Arrey, I think cheaper airfare is need for day. Look at bombay trains people go jam packed in them, this is the Indian mentality na? So lets follow suit in case of airlines as well. Interesting article!

I think we are putting too many eggs in a basket. If we increase the seating on a plane like in the case of the Airbus A380 and there is a plane crash then the number of people who loose their lives will also be more in number. Instead with more fuel efficient and faster planes we will be able to increase the frequency at the same time.

According to your solution airport capacity and turnaround times would have to improve. Personally i think Indian airports are too congested at the moment. Takes so long to wait in line then take off.

I love to fly. Its an amazing feeling, exhilaration and lil scary when plane takes off. I was surprised that quite a few friends of mine have never flown before. I was happy to hear their experiences. With so many low cost carriers flying has become possible

I think helicopter flights are amazing. An all new way to fly for me. Can´ t get enough of it. Sadly its very costly and elitist in India.

Point taken. Planes do not have thugs, beggar and thieves... only the occassional gang of guns & grenade toting hijakers!
Give me the thugs and the beggars any day...

Subject: Trains vs planes??

Not true. There is a beauty of flying a Cessna or a small plane on your own.
Even a normal flight can be exciting when you are seated next to the window. I´ ve heard they have MIG tourism in East Europe, Ukraine? I would love to sit in a Sukhoi or a MIG-29
Of course, it does not compare anywhere to travelling in stinking crowded, noisy railway stations that you seem to be fond of. Worse, you have thugs, beggars, thieves, and all sorts of people to deal with.

A plane flight may seem exciting to someone whos never flown before. But apart from that theres no special charm abt a plane trip.
In fact, bot railways and road journeys are a fqar more interesting way to enjoy your holiday travel. I m sure no one can argue on that.
