The Beginning of a Dream - I

The Beginning of a Dream - I

Purnima Mirchandani refused to let circumstances get her down, although there had been enough reason for her to feel sad. Here's how she first decided to adopt a child.

She sat by the window listening to the falling rain, seeing the children splashing in the puddles in glee - weaving pictures in her mind - thinking of what would be ………
Here she was, alone all day, in silence, listening only to her thoughts that centered around one thing - a child. When would she have that child to hold in her arms - the one who would call her "Mama", the one who would steal her heart and hold it in the palm of her hand? When would that day arrive?
She did everything to take her mind off that mental picture, falling headlong into her career, trying to find a distraction in mundane affairs, but that image was too deeply imprinted in her mind. She watched other children and wondered why she felt so bereft. Why did she have this need to have her own? She tried spending time with other's children - her friend's children and her students, but there was a strange void in her life.
Finally, she took the plunge - and to her utter amazement - found that things fell into place. One night, she casually brought up the topic with her best friend (who also happens to be her life partner) and suggested adoption - and right away, in the next instant he agreed wholeheartedly, and wished for a daughter. That night, for the first time in years, she slept with a song in her heart.
There was a flurry of activity. Once the first step was taken, the next step was informing the family of their decision. Their reaction was a surprise! His mother, who was over the age of eighty, said she too had wanted to suggest adoption. Her parents also supported them after being sure that they knew what they were going in for.
Then came the paperwork. The caseworker summed it up by saying what was on their minds: "You want the baby right away."
Her husband gave her a little plaque saying "Love comes to the heart through the arms of a mother" - it touched her heart. She would finally have a little one in her arms! Those months dragged so!
One day they were taken to see the baby. What a little bundle - and what a lovely smile! She climbed up in Purnima's arms and snuggled like she belonged there. He was scared to hold her - she was such a precious little bundle. She stole into their hearts and firmly took hold of them.
What a homecoming! The entire family was there to welcome and bless her. It was overwhelming for them. Their hearts were brimming with happiness. Nothing could top this feeling!
An old Hindi film song goes (translated) "Little child, what is in your fist? Our destiny is in your fist!" It really is true. She is now a grown-up girl - almost a woman - and her parents' destiny is in her fist!

The title of the article is apt and it is really the beginning of a happy journey...the joy that a child brings into the family is incomparable.
