Every kid has a favourite comic book hero. For some its Superman or Batman, for others it may be Archie or Richie Rich. But for those kids who are Spider-Man fans, its going to be a wonderful summer.
The movie stars the unassuming Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, a high school student who lives with his aunt and uncle. Peter gets bitten by a genetically modified spider during a tour of the school laboratory. He slowly starts discovering his powers and at first, tries to make money by entering a wrestling match. But then a thief runs past whom Peter doesnt bother to stop, and this thief goes on to murder Peters Uncle Ben. Uncle Bens words With great power comes great responsibility, keep resonating within him and Peter decides to devote his powers to fighting crime. And this fight against crime brings Peter face to face with the Green Goblin, his arch enemy, who he must overpower and save the world.
Then theres Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson or M.J., the girl next door, who Peter has been in love since childhood, but shes never given him a second look until his newly acquired powers give him the confidence to broach a friendship, which gradually develops into love.
The special effects that had Spider-Man swinging from one skyscraper to the next are exhilarating, and Tobey, with his innocent looks, makes a nerdy yet vulnerable and lovable Peter Parker. Kirsten Dunst looks her usual pale self, but red hair does make her look rather stunning. The city and set designs are spectacular. The storyline, unfortunately, is rather juvenile, but whats even worse is the costume of the Green Goblin. While Spider-Mans costume is incredibly sleek, the Green Goblins is, to say the least, appalling. The comic book Goblin always had a rubbery looking appearance, while this one is blown out in full armour and the mask looks like it was taken from an ancient Power Rangers episode.
However, all in all, the director Sam Raimi did an admirable job and the movie smashed box office records. Its going to be the biggest blockbuster yet, and while this hype seems to be unjustified, parents can be sure of one thing: their kids will love it.
