Normally, there is no need to use ear-buds or anything usually advertised for cleaning the inside of the ears. In fact, ear-buds, when inserted inside the ears, push the wax back into the ears and this disturbs the natural flow. Also, the cotton in the buds absorbs the dampness of the wax and makes it dry.

Is it Safe to Use Ear-Buds for Cleaning Baby’s Ears

Paediatricians do not recommend cleaning the inside of the ears of infants or very young children. Ear-buds, in fact, push the ear wax inside the ear which is emitted through natural process. So, if you are not very careful and even slightly let it go inside your child’s ears, it would push the ear wax that was oozed out of your child’s ears. Internal cleaning of the ears may turn harmful instead of being useful.

When is Ear Wax a Problem?

  • Hearing gets affected
  • Discomfort in the ear
  • Ear infection
  • Foul smell from the ear
  • Itching in the ears
  • Noises in the ears
If any of the above symptoms are seen, it is advisable to contact your child’s paediatrician. Accumulation of ear wax is normal and you need not worry because it as it does not cause any harm to the child. If you see large amount of ear wax clearly while looking into the ears of your child, you can use the ear-buds especially designed for infants after speaking to a paediatrician and clean the ones accumulated on the outer side of the ears. You need to be careful while doing it and make sure that you gently clean only the outer side.

  • Never allow your child to put anything in her ears and also do not allow playing with cotton swabs.

After bathing the baby, cleaning ears with a damp cloth is good. It is ok to use ear buds for cleaning the outer part of baby's ears.
