Question 1 How does weight gain in pregnancy affect baby?
Answer 1 Weight gain in pregnancy has an impact on baby’s size and health at birth.
Question 2 Recommended weight gain is decided on the basis of which factors?
Answer 2 Recommended total weight gain depends on whether the mother is underweight, normal weight or overweight at the start of pregnancy.
Question 3 What is the minimal weight that should be gained during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy?
Answer 3 Normally there is no weight gain or minimal weight gain in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Question 4 What is the calorie intake requirement during pregnancy and during lactation?
Answer 4 An increase of 300 calories is recommended in pregnancy and 500 calories in lactation.
Question 5 What should the diet of pregnant lady include to ensure the intake of calcium, iron, vitamin B-12 and Vitamin B-9 (Folate)?
Answer 5 Good sources of proteins include milk, cheese, yoghurt, meat, fish, egg, and poultry. Calcium - milk,orange juice,cereal,banana,beans,peas,nuts. Iron - green leafy vegetables like palak and methi, dry fruit, whole grain bread, meat, fish, poultry, iron, fortified, cereals, apple. Vitamin B12 –fortified cereals are recommended, dairy products. Vitamin B-9 (Folate) - bread,cereal, green leafy vegetables and orange juice. Very Important: Avoid Alcohol and stop smoking.
Question 6 How to avoid nausea and vomiting during pregnancy?
Answer 6 Identify what foods cause nausea and try to avoid them and Eat small quantities at frequent intervals. Try to avoid oily, spicy food and avoid excess caffeine. Keep yourself well hydrated. Liquids like soups, juices, and milkshakes are easier to digest than solid food. Being active may worsen the symptoms, so rest as much as possible. You may need to lie down and do nothing, take leave from work or get help with housework. Try not to drive a car but be driven. Try cold foods (Icecream, Milkshakes, Salads, Curd, Etc.) Avoid eating large amounts at one time which can trigger the nausea/vomiting.
Question 7 How to deal with food cravings during pregnancy?
Answer 7 Some people experience cravings for certain foods. Don't worry you can fulfill the craving as it is likely to last for only a short time.
Question 8 What is the normal time period during which a pregnant woman may have to cope with nausea?
Answer 8 Remember that the nausea feeling is a passing phase and will considerably reduce after the first three months.
