Are You Inculcating Arrogance in Your Child?

Are You Inculcating Arrogance in Your Child?
Do not let the confidence of your child turn into arrogance. Learn about the signs of arrogance in your child and take right measures to correct such behaviour.
Arrogance is defined as being “unpleasantly proud and behaving as if you are more important than, or know more than, other people”. Arrogant children want to show off that they are better than other children around and also put them down, whether publicly or just inside their own mind. They do not want to take a hit on their self esteem, and want to show others that they are flawless and perfect in all that they do. They try to divert other people’s attention from their imperfections and weaknesses.

Signs that You are Raising an Arrogant Child

When a group of children are playing, arrogant kidsare hard to miss. They stand out from others due to their poor behaviour, sharp statements, bragging, shouting and considering themselves superior than other children even their siblings. There is a very thin line between confident and arrogant children. Read below to know the difference between the two and understand if you need to act soon before your child becomes arrogant.

Being Overconfidence

If asked about doing a work, an arrogant child would say that he or she can do it better than others and the feeling would be as if it is the most important thing. Whereas, a confident child would agree and say that he or she can do it.

Bragging Constantly

Arrogant children would want to impress others about their achievements and would proudly express this in front of others, whereas confident children would be proud of themselves on the achievements accomplished.

Hiding Flaws

Arrogant children hide their imperfections and failure and feel personal shame rather than accepting and working on them to learn from failure as confident children would normally do.

Acting too Competitive

Arrogant children would take everything as a competition and be very judgemental about others whereas confident children would review and assess their own behaviour.

Feeling Insecure

Arrogant children are insecure and treat other children as a threat and therefore, they lack compassion. Confident children view other children with a sense of fair play.

No Sense of Teamwork

When participating in a group, arrogant children would focus on their contribution and would want to stand out. Whereas confident children work as a team and they think success is of the team and not one individual.

No Respect for Others

Arrogant children do not respect and care about other people’s ideas and input as compared to confident children who value these.

Constantly Pulling Down Others

Arrogant children would not be ashamed of hurting others and pulling them down by words or deeds. Whereas, confident children would work to support others.

Reason Why a Child Turns Arrogant

It is easy to point if a child is arrogant but we as adults need to understand that only talking and pointing would not help the child. We need to resolve this before these arrogant children turn into arrogant adults. The question next is how. All we need to do is figure out why and what made the child do what he or she is doing. The reasons can possibly be:

Praising Children Too Much

As a parent you may want to take pride and joy in your children and their achievements and give them the special mention every time. Research suggests doing this can lead you to create arrogant children as they will always have an inflated view of themselves. Instead parents should mention that they have done well and they are as good as others. This will bring in confidence and the children will be well rounded.

Lack of Parental Involvement

Some missing element in the child’s life, such as parents unavailable for the child all day, one parent is missing or there is no parental bonding.

Comparing Children

When a child faces constant comparison with other children in sports, studies, etc and then being put down by parents regularly leads to children being arrogant. Being arrogant helps them by taking out that negativity on others.
Now that we know the characteristics of an arrogant child and the possible reasons behind their actions and words, we as mature adults need to act on this before a child turns arrogant. We need to help our children live their lives to the best of their abilities with compassion, a sense of community, and a true sense of what success is about.

Why are some children arrogant? How to deal with arrogant children? What are the ways to prevent arrogance in children? Discuss here.

Arrogant behaviour in children should be nipped in the bud because children may not understand the importance of being modest if it is too late.

Some times children learn this behavior from parents, so parents should be careful about the way they act in front of children.

Parents who praise their children too much are definitely raising arrogant children.
