A Foreign Language

Does your child speak a foreign language? Enroll your child in a foreign language course, and she will thank you for it.

Children already have so much to study in school, that adding another subject by encouraging her to take up a foreign language not presently taught in school may seem like adding to that burden. So most parents prefer that their child spend time in non-academic related extra-curricular activities such as music or tennis. However, remember that at a very young age a child doesn't really have a lot of studying to do, and a new language can very easily be accommodated in their schedules. In addition, younger children are able to grasp a new language very easily. So, you don't need to wait until your child starts learning a foreign language in school before enrolling her for classes. Consider starting her off now.

Time

The biggest hurdle to learning a new language is the entire process of finding a good course, enrolling and taking out the time to attend classes. You will find that as your child grows older, her schedule will be more and more packed. At a young age, however, children in India often have so much free time on their hands that they get bored and don't know what to do with themselves. Also, at a younger age, your child is less likely to have a hectic social schedule that will distract him from his extra-curricular activities.

Foresight

Exposure to a foreign language can benefit your child in numerous ways, especially if you know your child will learn the language in a higher class. 10-year-old Shweta's mother knew that Shweta would be learning French in school, starting from the 8th standard. In Naina's building there lived a lady who taught French to older school-going kids appearing for their board examinations. Naina first asked her daughter if she would like to learn the language, and when her daughter seemed enthusiastic, Naina spoke with the tutor and asked if she could send her daughter to learn elementary French. The tutor agreed, and soon Shweta started her French lessons. Every time she got home, she was eager to share with Naina all that she had learnt. By the time Shweta reached the 8th standard a few years later, she was far, far ahead of the rest of the class. She also scored very well in French, and this greatly increased her self-confidence and interest in the language. Shweta now speaks French fluently, and her knowledge of the language opened new doors for her, that lead straight to Paris!

Career options

The most obvious job for someone fluent in a foreign language is that of a translator. However, this is not the only job opportunity available. Knowledge of a foreign language is an asset in numerous other fields as well ranging from hospitality to banking, and if your resume shows that you are fluent in a foreign language, your child will have an edge over others.

Many children and adults are fascinated by new languages, and will willingly soak up all they can. It is thus important that you don't push your child into learning a foreign language. Only enroll your child in lessons if she shows an interest.
