Dyspraxia - A dyslexic disorder


Dyspraxia is a type of dyslexia. Regular practice, suitable exercise and proper treatment can bring about drastic improvement in dyspraxic children.


Dyspraxia is one of the types under the dyslexia disorder. It is the lack of the ability to perform movements and gestures. It is also known as Developmental Co-ordination Disorder or Motor Learning Disability. It is a result of immature neuron development. It can be caused during any stage of life because of brain sickness or injuries. The main cause of dyspraxia is not known, it is a matter under research and study. What is dyspraxia?

Dyspraxia is the disability to co-ordinate while performing actions and postures. This disorder is similar to clumsiness. In most cases, dyspraxia does not affect intelligence. It can also be a hereditary problem in certain cases. Such disorder is very difficult to identify. 70 per cent of the people affected by dyspraxia are male. Children facing dyspraxia may have to cope with the disability to remember. They are also not able to participate in games which require teams. It does not affect everyone in the same way. It may also be caused due to improper development of baby in womb or insufficient supply of oxygen to baby during its growth in the mother's womb.


Symptoms of dyspraxia

Dyspraxia does not show similar characteristics in all those who are affected by it. However here are some common symptoms shown by the person affected by dyspraxia.

  • Unable to stand straight for a long time

  • Disability to ride a bicycle

  • Disability to catch and throw a ball

  • Confusion regarding whether to raise left or right hand

  • Unable to jump

  • Not able to stop certain activity immediately

  • Not able to change direction quickly while walking or running

  • Frequency of falling is higher

  • Poor grip while writing, holding cutlery, holding a bat etc.

  • Requires longer time to do a specific activity including reading and writing

  • Takes more time to learn new activities and things

  • Disability to recognise non-verbal messages and sign language

Dealing with dyspraxic children

Dyspraxic children may take longer time to do certain activities but they can also reach the level of normal children. Here are few things that parents can do to bring about improvement in their children.
  • Try practicing in activities which your child finds difficult to perform. Frequent practice can help to bring development in your child

  • Make your child exercise with you and help your child to learn different movements of legs and hands

  • Take help of the things like colourful charts, models, pictures when you teach something to your child. This will help to bring improvement in memory of your child.

  • Give your child more time to learn new things and your continuous guidance

  • Assist your child in completion of homework and assignment

  • Practice yoga and meditation regularly with your child. It will help your child to increase concentration on different activities

  • Keep a track on all the activities in which your child has developed or not developed. This will help you to take suitable steps to help your child to cope difficulty

  • Consult professionals and experts periodically so that you can find some easier ways to encourage development in your child

Treating dyspraxia

It is scientifically proven that drastic improvement is possible in dyspraxic children. They can also become normal. They need regular practice and proper treatment. Treatments like special exercise, techniques of hand-eye-coordination, reki, osteopathy, acupuncture, herbal treatment and homeopathy can make development possible in a dyspraxic child. You can adopt suitable treatment for your child after consulting a professional.

It may take a little longer but you will not remain empty handed. If you take a little pain and effort to help your child, you will definitely succeed. You require building patience in yourself and giving emotional support to your child. You should learn that if not now, your help to your child will surely pay off in long run.
