 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What can I do about dark lips? Any suggestions?

Mona (Mumbai, )

A: If your black lips have been caused by drinking too much tea, coffee or by smoking, you will need to cut it down before your lips can lighten. Apply Vaseline to your lips regularly. Ghee is also very good, apply a little ghee every night. This keeps lips moisturised. You could also apply lemon juice to your lips daily, to lighten them slightly. Wear lipstick with sunscreen, as uv radiation may cause pigmentation.

Q: In this past year I have been getting black spots all over my bottom lip, and it is very ugly. I suck on my bottom lip to cover it up. Do you think that that it is making it worse? I was wondering if you could tell me what chapstick would be the best for me?

Donnella (LA, USA)

A: You may want to see a doctor to rule out any medical cause for black spots on your lips. Stop sucking on your bottom lip. Saliva will dry out your lips, making them worse. Try applying VAseline petroleum jelly. Also, applying ghee or oilve oil regularly will help. If you smoke you need to quit as smoking causes lips to go black. Also, if you feel conscious, wear lipstick! Don't suck on them. Make sure you never wear lipstick that is old or that has expired. Wear good, reliable brands.

Q: Does drinking tea actually darken your lips or is it coffee?

Shila (Mumbai, India)

A: Both play a part in darkening your lips. However, one or two cups a day doesn't matter - it is only when you drink tea or coffee in excess that it can darken your lips. The prime cause however is smoking.

Vidula Chopra

Q: Does wearing lipstick make lips darkar....I use rimmel. Just hered from friends. So before I use it I just want your suggesion.

Nandani (Mumbai, India)

A: As long as you wear good quality lipstick that has not expired, you need not worry. Never wear lipstick from unheard-of brands that you may find while browsing random street stalls. Rimmel is a good brand. Never wear lipstick that has expired, and don't wear it constantly. Clean out the lipstick when you are at home.

Q: I suffer from darkened and spot of pink lips from smoking. How can I improve my appearance. This is embarassing. I read some of your answers to others and I'm trying glycerine and lemon juice. How long will it take to improve?

Wesley (New York, USA)

A: Your lips will not undergo improvement until you stop smoking. The stains are caused by nicotine, and they will only keep getting darker and darker. If you quit smoking and then start trying these remedies, stains caused by smoking should decrease within a month.

Q: I hear everyone wanting dark lips pink, how do you get pink bottom lips dark to match my upper lips...any feedback will help?

Shila (Mumbai, India)

A: Simply blot on some lipstick to your lower lip to match the colour of your upper lip. After applying lipstick, dab with compact powder and reapply the lipstick. Rub with your fingers and blot with a tissue. This will give it a more natural effect, depending on the colour you use of course.

Q: I would like to know some good remedy for lightening dark lips.I have dark lips and have tried almost everything including glycerin and lemon.Does beet root help? I have natural dark lips. Also i would like to know how to grow thick long eyelashes

Rinkie (Mumbai, India)

A: It would be possible to reduce lip stains to an extent, but if your lips are naturally dark, there is little you can do to lighten them. Also, there is no way you can increase the length of your lashes. However, you can apply mascara to give the illusion of longer, thicker lashes.

Q: Hi. I wanted to reconfirm if applying glycerine and lemon juice on lips in the night and leaving it over night will really help in lightening my darkened lips caused of smoking?

Tanvi (Mumbai, India)

A: Yes, it will help. In addition, keeping your lips well moisturised will also help. It will take some time though. This will not help unless you give up smoking, because your lips will just keep getting stained.

Q: My lips have turned very dark over the last 4 years. They used to be light pink but suddenly changed. I dont smoke, drink coffee, and very seldomly drink tea. I have even been to the dermetologist and she gave me a cream to apply to my lips but it doesn't seem to be working. Can you tell me what is the problem and how can I fix it?

Dalila (Mumbai, UAE )

A: Lips can also turn durk due to pigmentation caused by sun exposure, or hormones. Avoid stepping out in the sun. Also, make sure you use only good quality lipsticks that have not expired. Applying old, expired lipsticks and make-up also causes damage. Apply glycerine to your lips regularly every night before going to sleep, and prevent them from getting dry. Don't lick your lips.

Q: My lips have turned to dark color after a few years of start using lipsticks. At that same time I was under TB medication, so now the lips has turned to dark and its looks really ugly without lipsticks on it now. I have to use lipstick to cover all those black areas. Its not completely dark but mostly the lips is now covered with black spots. What can I do to remove the black marks? Any advice in order to solve my problem? Thanks in advance

Ratha (Mumbai, India)

A: Lemon is a natural bleach, so if you apply lemon along with a little glycerin to your lips at night, it should help. However, if this doesn't work, you should see a skin specialist as your problem was the result of medication.

Vidula Chopra

Q: My lips are very dark, i used to smoke. What can i do to get them back to the normal colour?

Renjith (Mumbai, India)

A: Scrubbing your lips gently with lemon daily should help remove the discolouration, but this may be harsh on your lips, so make sure you apply glycerin to your lips first. Leave the lemon and glycerin on for at least ten minutes before washing off. You could also do the same at night, and sleep with lemon on your lips. Drink ten glasses of water daily to detox your system.

Q: My lips have become very dark and dry and when I apply lipstick or gloss it stings and leaves a moisture feeling on my lips. I have been using Herpecin-L lip balm but it doesn't seem to be helping. What else can I do or use?

Denise (Mumbai, India)

A: Apply a mixture of lemon and glycerine to your lips every night, before turning in. Leave it on overnight and wash it off in the morning. This should help lighten your lips. Cut down on the tea and coffee that you consume and opt for fruit juices and water. Don't lick your lips. You could be allergic to lipstick or gloss, so lay off it for a while until your colour returns to normal. Herpecin-L does help in case of chapped lips, cold sores or blisters on the lips due to sun exposure or fever, however, if it doesn't seem to be helping you, lay off it for a while. Switch to regular vaseline. If none of this helps, visit your dermatologist, who may prescribe a mild topical steroid. Just apply it for a few days. Topical steroids are not recommended for prolonged use.

Q: I had once applied a lipstick and got very allergic to lipsticks since then. I developed swollen, watery lips. Soon my lips became very itchy, dry and started cracking. They remains this way for weeks at a time. My lips also darken. There are cracks on the corners of my lips. This happens even when I don't apply lipsticks. What is the reason?

Mihika (Mumbai, U S A )

A: In addition to the lipstick you must be allergic, to some soap or sunlight – this allergy could have started following the severe allergic reaction to the lipstick. Use a mild steroid regularly for 3-4 weeks and following that, regularly apply some bland (non-allergic, non-scented moisturiser). Don't lick your lips. Move out in the sun as less as possible.

Q: I used to have pink lips. For the past couple of years, my upper lip has become very dark and my lower lip is still pink. What should I do to make my upper lip pink again?

Reema (Mumbai, )

A: Blackening of lips can occur following a lot many causes. Allergy to lipsticks (yes, only on the upper lip), prolonged exposure to the sun, etc... Consult a skin specialist who can prescribe a mild steroid or depigmenting agent for your problem. Lip sucking or chewing gum too can cause this problem.

Q: Hi, I am a male. My lips are dark. I don't smoke, but I drink hot tea/coffee. How can I change my lip color? Since I am a male I can't apply lipstick. Please suggest an alternative.

Karan (Mumbai, India)

A: Apply a mixture of lemon, glycerine and malai to your lips every night, before turning in. Leave it on overnight and wash it off in the morning. This may help lighten the colour of your lips. Try cutting down on the tea and coffee that you consume, and opt for fruit juices instead, wherever possible.
