Giving gifts is not so that you receive something in return. It is purely for sentimental reasons. However, I don' t really think that you are diminishing the spirit of the celebrations if you do not give someone a gift. Gifts can be given to children since it is something for them to look forward to.

Subject:  Budgeting is good
I think planning a budget for gifts is a good idea. We often do not have any limits put on us and we tend to go overboard with our purchases. The budget idea will help you so that you do not feel guilty later on.

Subject:  so many gifts?
I have nothing against gift-giving but I wonder why is it necessary to give gifts to anybody and everybody. Gift giving should be restricted to family members and close friends. If many people give you a gift, you will be forced to return the sentiment even if you do not want to.
