Routine Tests:Archie and other Please Clear My Doubts...Urgent

Hi Archie and Other Friends,

I have seen so many people asking questions about their problems and i am impressed by the answers you guys give. I hope you will clear my doubts too.

I m pregnant but i m not sure of the date of my last period (June 9 or July 7) though i feel it should be somewhere in the middle. I had been taking my birth control pills till my last period. I went to the doctor on August 16 and she said that my fetus was 5 weeks and 3 days which does not fit in both the LMP criteria according to her. She gave me two medicines for fetal growth--allylestrenol and isoxsuprine hydrochloride SR. Now, i have two questions--

1--I read in my bcp booklet that the period by bcp is an induced one and not a natural one so the ovuluation period may be different to what is calculated in normal periods. Could this be the reason that the baby's age is not matching with my period date and that my ovalution could be much more later than when it was supposed to be?

2--The doctor took an ultrasound. Is it good to take ultrasound so soon (i heard it should be taken only after 8 weeks of the fetus). I want to know this because i m scheduled to have another one tomorrow. will it affect my baby's growth? and also are the medicines given have any side effects?

Please help me...i m not sure what to do. I had told my doctor that i had been taking bcps and have become pregnant immediately after stopping it and the fact that she took ultrasound so soon for me makes me doubt if i should continue with her or change the doctor.

Thanks a lot in advance, bye, and take care

VK,
All seems perfectly fine to me and there is nothing to worry about:)

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Feel free to place your concerns.

1. Since you are not sure about LMP as to if that's June 7th or July 7th it's adding to confusion.

2. Obtained gestation through ultrasound perfectly fits with a LMP around July 10th.

3. Knowing that after taking bcp it may take as long as 3 cycles to get periods with normal frequency -prior to starting bcp, it allows to imagine that although LMP may have been July 7th the ouvlation could not occure on 14th day and may have occured on 17th day.

Now about ultrasound: it's not a problem to take an ultrasound prior to 8th week. I insist girls not to have one before completion of 7th week is mainly because there are chances that you don't get to see all you expect to see and that does not mean there is anything wrong with pregnancy but all it adds to confusion of an expectant couple.
If you have been through with an ultrasound and found that you were 5 week 3 days and did see gestation sac, fetal pole then all is well. At this stage there only developing embryo and no fetus indeed, it will be in the 7th week or at the completion of 7th week.

Tomorrow it would be another 10 days making it nearly 7 weeks gestation you are expected to see fetus about 4 mm to 10 mm in size and it may be that you will hear heart beat (on August 26th), the time when your embryo is graduated to fetus.
Ohterwise if possible delay your upcoming ultrasound by another 7 days and you will hear heart beats for sure.

No, repeats of ultrasound in first trimester or any stage of pregnancy are not going to harm your littleone.

You should remain worry free and enjoy pregnancy.

Archie
