Speech:My 30 month old does not speak much

My concern is that my 30 month old is not speaking much. There are so many languages around him as we are based is Switzerland( engish/ german/ hindi). His common word is 'mama' and he uses it almost everywhere. Other words are papa, car(sounds like caaaaa), nana, app( for apple),gaba( for gauva) , some word which sounds like 'woh kya hai'( means what is that) but these also I have to force him to speak. On his own he speaks his own langauge which not even a single word I can understand. For the past few months I am really after him to speak, repeating things, telling stories etc but not of much use. Should I leave him to himself and not be after him so much. Please suggest ???? He understands almost everything, knows body parts, associates words with pictures, solves puzzles, plays with blocks, understand when we give a two sentence statement , takes me to bathroom for toilet and potty, pulls my hand takes me to kitchen for water, nods his head for 'no',likes listening to his favourite story book, favourite CD .... and plays happily in his pre-school with other kids. He likes being around with children.
All children of his age are speaking a lot.Suggest me what should I do to make him speak

Hi,
I was concerned about my son when he did not start talking even when he was 1.5 years. I realised this, bcoz my nephew talked very clearly at the age of 1.5 years. When i spk to our Health visitor here, she advise to concentrate on local language and mother tongue, so we started speaking to him only in English and since then there was no looking back. He started reading fluently from the age of 3.5 years.

Some parents think, they will learn slowly, but i think we must know the real reason and act on it asap, as i know someone whose daughter has the same prob and they neglected it and that girl still has prob ith talking even tho she is about 10 years now. So, best thing is to get a solution and act on it NOW.

Kala.

Subject:  Speech is also related to CLEAR hearing

Hi,
Thanks Kala and Rashpal too. I got 'hearing test' done for my son and found out that though 'he can hear but not clearly'. Some things like environmental sounds he cannot hear.He has water in his middle ear both sides and the Doctor said that this could be the reason behind his Speech Delay. We will get him operated soon and as soon as the fluid comes out he will start hearing CLEARLY.
I just hope that after this hearing thing becomes normal, my son starts speaking too. Wish us LUCK !!!!!!!

Researchers have found that those children who are hearing several languages at once may take longer to speak than those that are exposed to only one. If he is understanding and responding, I wouldn't worry. He will come around and speak when he is ready. I would imagine that those children around him that are speaking are probably exposed to just one or two languages. If his preschool instructors haven't approached you yet, then things are probably just fine.

I don't have any educational background in languages but do have a degree in education so was exposed to a lot of things. I would think that the mother tongue should be picked up first (but only if it's the language that the child is exposed to most). Not sure if I would increase the preschool or not. I do however, agree with his instructors and would expose to him to children his own age - he will follow and imitate them and will try and communicate with them. Good luck!

Thank you for the consolation. Do you think children pick up mother tongue first? He goes to English medium pre-school twice a week, do you think it is advisable to make it 5 times a week???
The little words he says are mostly in hindi, would sending him to 'ENGLISH' school everyday confuse him more !!!!!
His pre-school instructor says more he stays with children of his age the better !! what do you say ????

Speech/language delay - 2.3 yr old boy
Hello Everyone

Our 28 months old boy is not speaking simple 2 or 3 word sentences yet. He speaks a few words such as mama, papa, aunty etc but definitely not more than 10. Also, he doesn't understand slightly longer sentences, even when we speak slowly and enact it such as "we'll go out after we eat". Otherwise, he appears perfectly normal. Hi All,

My son is less than 4 and has been diagnosed to be on the autism spectrum. He is non-verbal. We are taking him for OT and ABA/speech therapy.

Meanwhile, I read about an Ayurvedic hospital called Kerala Samajam hospital in Shoranur. Has anyone gone there for treatment? Any reviews?

Hints for Nursing
Babies eat and eat and eat. Although nature has done a pretty good job of providing you and your baby with the right equipment, in the beginning it's almost guaranteed to be harder than you expected. From sore nipples to tough latch-ons, nursing can seem overwhelming.
