Do you believe in the power of mantras? If so, what is your favourite mantra? Do you recite it everyday at the same time or whenever you feel the need to? Do you pray often?

It is a pity that we still discuss superstitious nonsense to make ourselves feel better in this day and age. Reciting mantra will do nothing other than waste time and mystify what is real in every situation.

If you are realy a rationalist, please keep yourself up-to-date with what´ s happening around you. Numerous research studies have proven the power of the spoken word. Even if you do not attach religious connotations to it, repeating a charged statement that you have complete faith in does alter your mindset and consequently, the course of events. Additionally, please go to the Himalayas and listen to a monk or sadhu reciting some chants. If you do not feel a shiver up your spine or a joy in your soul, you do not know how to feel.

Looks like you have been repeating the word NONSENSE for such a long time that you have perfected the meaning of it. Dont take mantras lightly, my dear friend. Strange things can happen...

througout theday we encounter all kinds of irritations and annoyance and respond to this with anger, pessimism, uttering cusswords and all kinds of rubbish. I wondered if mantras can help us in this situaitons and Everyday I started chanting "om mani padme hum" wherever i felt particularly negative, in the local train, in office and also at home. it was very difficlt at but then after lot of persistence i am begining to feel relaxed. this is absolutely amazing

There is no need to feel ´ sad´ even if the Gayatri mantra we cnat is not the original. Lets think of it as a hybrid! It is the faith that matters. And anyway, condensed or whatever, every word in Sanskrit is perfect phonetically speaking.

Om
Gayatri mantra is more complicated than you can ever understand. There are several TYPES of Gayatris.

Did you know, o ignorant one, that there is a Gayatri mantra for diffeent gods such as Ganesh?

The Gayatri that you sing is a condensed version found in the Rig Ved and the Yajur Ved. Only enlightened men have the good fortune to chant the original. What you know sa the Gayatri is not bad. it´ s also powerful.

Not true. Gayatri mantra can be chanted by anyone who can follow the rules. Pregnant women often chant this mantra. And the mantra has nothing to do with south or north India.. Yes, most people can't pronounce this mantra easily. In fact, let me tell you a secret: the mantra you chant is NOT THE ORIGINAL GAYATRI MANTRA...

You forgot the one that everyone repeats -more than 108 times a day, the Mani Mantra. I will teach, It goes like: "Money Money, Capital Market, Dow Industrial S&P"!

Very mystical for global India

So what? There is nothing wrong in desiring money. It is when the desire overpowers everything else and begins to take precedence over other aspects of life that the problem occurs. I see nothing wrong with materialism.

I am not a Buddhist but I think this mantra is absolutely wonderful. There was a song by Rahul Sharma, titled 'Om mani padme hum'. Every time I hear it, I can feel my spirit awaken and dance within me. A suggestion - if you mentioned Buddhism, you should have covered mantras from all religions. Aren't there any in Islam or Christianity? I am quite sure there are a few in Jainism.

Awesome article.

I live in North India and the way Gayatri Mantra is recited here is sad. Mostly, people dont know correct pronunciation and I think it is not supposed to be chanted by females. Infact, general Hindi pronunciation in this Hindi region is sad.

Hope people wake up after reading this.

" Gayatri mantra is not supposed to be chanted by females." Wow, I never thought I would get to read this sort of statements in this era. As far as I know, it is not true. Most musical records of the Gayatri Mantra have female singers. Additionally, even if it is ´ true´ , I think it is one of those tenets that have hampered social progress. There is no need to get into a catfight as to who is more spiritual - men or women. However, I wonder if someone who believes people should be treated differently on the basis of their sex can ever be ´ spiritual´ . One can chant as many mantras as they want. And spend hours on perfecting the pronunciation and the intonation. But they will still remain a sick person if they have mental blocks.

This is a great article that is very informative. My own family upbringing has been rather secular and did not include chanting or other forms of spiritual practices. I think I missed a lot. THis article has whetted my appetite to find out more on this very mysterious topic. THank You

That was a very informative and well-written article. I believe in the power of incantations. However, I think the power of mantras extends to all spheres of one's life, not just the religious. Recent studies have proven that repeating any statement often enough infuses it with the power to become real. But definitely, for me, mantras are the best part of Hindu rituals. Yet, I have observed that the person recitiing them has to have some purity and honesty in his voice (or should it be soul?). Else there is no resonance, no magic. I guess the focal point is faith.
