Ways to Calm your Soul

In today's fast-paced world, peace of mind is a rarity. Read on for some tips to help your soul cope with the challenges.

Your daily schedule takes its toll on your body and mind, leaving you fatigued. At the same time, it also leaves its mark on your soul. A tired soul, in turn, results in more physical and mental tiredness. This is because your soul is the core essence of who you are. Everything that affects your soul, affects you directly. In this context, exercising your soul becomes even more important in order for you to lead a balanced life.

Clear your Mind

Your mind is constantly at work. Even when you are at rest, your mind is always thinking of something. It could be a project due at work, your child's school PTA meeting, those groceries you need to buy, appointments you have to make, etc. These non-stop thoughts leave your mind with no time for anything else. Consequently, your mind never has a chance to rest.

Sometimes, you just need to let go. Your mind and soul are linked intrinsically. Only when your mind is relaxed will your soul be truly at rest. Also, it is in these moments of tranquillity that your soul is able to communicate with you, effectively. Being in touch with your soul helps you discover your inner self and then enables you to connect with the true essence of the world outside.

Clearing your mind is a difficult task. However, it can be accomplished with simple meditation techniques. Once simple technique is to close your eyes and focus on your breathing. When stray thoughts enter your head, gradually let go of them, constantly returning your focus to your breathing. Although it will seem impossible to achieve at first, do not be discouraged. Keep trying and your persistence will be rewarded eventually.

Be Happy

Happiness is the key to a healthy soul. Being an eternal optimist is not a foolish thought. Happiness can mean the difference between a person willing to take a chance and someone who gives up on their pursuits. Happiness does not merely refer to the external joy you experience upon receiving a material blessing. Happiness is also indicative of your inner state of being.

When things are not going so well in your life, it is easy to feel sad. In such a situation, remember that it is you who can change the way you feel. The power to improve your mood lies within your soul. All you need to do is let it out. The seventeenth century poet, Richard Lovelace, once said:

"Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage,
Minds innocent and quiet take,
That for a hermitage.
"

Improve your Attitude

Life is too short for you to spend time worrying about things that are out of your control. Learn to let go. Do not obsess over tasks or spend time trying to achieve a level of perfectionism that you know is impossible. In fact, when you take the time to notice things like the brightness of the day, the singing of the birds, etc. your life will seem more enjoyable. Changing your attitude and your perceptions is a stepping stone to changing those aspects of your life that make you unhappy.

Before you go to sleep at night, you should be free of the negative energy you have accumulated during the day. For example, before you enter your room, walk over to a corner of the house and mentally dump your worries there. This can be a 'worry corner' for you. You will find that when you wake up in the morning, you will probably be unable to recollect what was troubling you the previous day.

Be Good to Others

Self absorption can make you callous and unfeeling. This leads to a soul that is unable to make a connection with the rest of you. Your motto should be to 'do unto others what you want them to do unto you'. It does not cost anything to be nice to someone. When you treat someone with respect, they will automatically do the same for you. In addition to respect, values like tolerance, patience, tact, etc. go a long way towards lightening the burdens placed on your soul.

The key to achieving a calm soul is practice. The journey might seem tough and endless, but never lose hope. In the end, it will be worth it.
