Care after Caesarean Section

Care after Caesarean Section

Right post delivery care is very essential after a c-section delivery. Read on to find tips on care and safety precautions which are required to be taken after a caesarean delivery.

Recovery of the mother post caesarean delivery may not be as smooth as expected. Caesarean is a major surgery where the effects and after effects of pain is felt post surgery. So, due care must be taken by the mother after delivery as she has to deal with the pain of surgery along with the demands of being a new mother like breastfeeding, diaper changes and the sleepless night routines. Here are some tips that can help you care for yourself after a C-section:

Breastfeed as Soon as Possible

After a caesarean delivery the mother might feel uncomfortable to breastfeed due to sore nipples, leaking breasts and clogged ducts. But doctors recommend that breastfeeding should commence at the earliest possible moment as it would prevent the clogging from getting worse and reduce the discomfort levels. Besides, it will also ensure that the baby’s nutritional requirements are not compromised and mother’s first milk helps him to boost his immune system.

The baby can be rested on feeding pillows so as to give some comfort to the mother. The lower abdomen should not be strained at all. The soreness of the nipple can be reduced by applying cremes suggested by your doctor.

Get Started with Slow Walking

Women suffer from excruciating pain after a caesarean delivery whose intensity may not reduce even after taking painkillers. The pain is often caused by the air that gets trapped inside the stomach. This is why doctors recommend that the mother starts slow walking within a few days post surgery. Since it might cause pain around the area of the stitches, the walk should start off very slowly and very cautiously. It is very important to start off as the more sedentary you tend to keep your body, the cramps and the pain would only worsen with time. Walking would help you recover faster.

Exercise Should be Gentle

Although you need to ensure that you have an adequate amount of physical activity, you must also take care that you do not over-exert yourself. You might want to get back in shape fast and lose the extra flab, but you need to be slow. You must take care on the stitches on your lower abdomen and remember that stress can cause undesirable complications that can delay recovery, and even bring in the risk of hernia in later years. So consult a trained fitness expert and your doctor on what type of exercises are safe for you during this period. It has been found that yoga is highly beneficial at this time.

A Nutritious Diet

Mothers must always take care of their post delivery diet and after a C-section you must all the more ensure that you take in a balanced diet that meets the requirement of your and the baby’s health. Tea, caffeine, tobacco and alcohol must be totally avoided. Avoid fast food and hot spices as they will delay the healing of your stitches. Fresh fruits, vegetables, fruit juices and plenty of water will keep you healthy and hydrated and also help in healing the scar. Food high in fibre content is especially recommended for mothers after a caesarean. You should have plenty of calcium and iron supplements too.

As a part of healthcare after caesarean, it is obvious that you take good care of your hygiene and ensure that your stitches are protected from infections. Any mark of swelling or redness in the scar should be immediately reported to the doctor. Follow the regimen of daily care diligently and before long you would find yourself a lot fitter and on the road to recovery.
