Dandruff Problem! - by Editor

Causes
There are many theories regarding the cause of dandruff.
Dead skin
One theory suggests that dandruff is a natural process, and is caused by the flaking of the scalp. Just as the body sheds dead skin, so does the scalp. When this skin is shed at an excessive rate, it leads to dandruff.Oily skin
It is a widely held belief that dandruff is caused by a dry scalp. However, this is not always the case, and dandruff is just as often caused by an oily scalp. The excessive oil forms a layer on the scalp, which dries, thickens and flakes off in the form of dandruff.Perspiration
If you exercise regularly, you perspire more, which could also lead to dandruff, especially if you do not shampoo as often as you should.Fungus
Certain forms of dandruff are also believed to be caused by a fungus on the scalp. It is believed that this fungus cannot be removed completely. Thus, dandruff too cannot be completely eradicated, only controlled.Other factors include:
- Cold weather
- Use of hair sprays and gels
- Certain conditioners
- Improper shampoo rinsing
- Infrequent hair washes
- Diet
- Stress
- Hormones
Treatment
If you have mild dandruff, you could try increasing the frequency of your hair washes. The rule of thumb is the more frequently you shampoo, the less dandruff you will have. If necessary, shampoo daily with a mild shampoo, to keep dandruff in check.
If your hair is dry but your scalp is oily, you may be hesitant to shampoo more often. Try this: wet your entire hair, but apply shampoo essentially to your scalp. Let the shampoo lightly run over your entire hair when you are rinsing it off your scalp, giving your locks a gentle wash.
If mild shampoos don't work, and if your dandruff is severe, use a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo which contains selenium sulfide to wash your hair. Use it sparingly, as anti-dandruff shampoos tend to be strong. After applying it, leave it on for at least five minutes before washing it off, to give the formula time to work.
After applying shampoo, massage your scalp lightly with your fingertips to loosen the scales.
The shampoo could be used on its own, or mixed with your regular shampoo. You could also alternate an anti-dandruff shampoo with your regular shampoo. Once the dandruff has gone, switch to your regular shampoo.
Help from your kitchen shelf
White vinegar is an excellent remedy for dandruff. Mix one cup of white
vinegar with one cup of water, and pour this over your scalp after your
hair wash, as a final rinse.

Comments: My daughter had dandruff and it didn't matter which medicated shampoo I used because it would come back a few days later. A old remedy for a friend in Mexico. Take a couple of tbs of sugar. Add water to make a dry past. Part the hair and rub the sugar in between the scalp. The sugar helps to lift the dead skin caused of dandruff and also stimulate the hair. Wash your hair with your regular shampoo. I used this method on my daughter twice and she has not had dandruff since.

Comments: Itchy scalp Aggravation of Pitta dosha, stress, allergic reaction to shampoo, air conditioning, pollution and central heating lead to an itchy and red scalp, with tiny pimples or sores, dull and dry hair. Remedies Add 1 teaspoon of camphor to half a cup of coconut oil and store it in gl container. Dosage: Mage this oil into the scalp before bed. 1. Mix two tablespoons of cosmetic vinegar and six tablespoons of hot water. Dab with cotton into the scalp, parting the hair with a comb apply all over the scalp. Preferably it should be used at bed time. Tie a scarf over the hair to avoid staining the pillow. Next morning wash the hair with shampoo. After the hair is thoroughly cleansed pour over as a last rinse a mixture of three tablespoons of cosmetic vinegar and one cup of hot water. Then dry the hair thoroughly. This should be done twice a week for three months. 2. Hot oil therapy is another method to cure dandruff. Mage hot oil into the scalp at bedtime. Next morning an hour before bath, rub lemon juice mixed with cosmetic vinegar (mix 1:2 ratio) into the scalp. Give the hair a good wash and egg shampoo. 3. Give your hair a hot steam bath. Mage hot oil with a hot damp towel and leave it on the head like a turban so that the steam can fight dandruff. You may use two towels for this purpose. 4. Here is another beauty tip for your hair. After giving your hair a good wash, boil five teaspoons of dried used tea leaves in lime water and use it as a last rinse after shampoo. This gives the hair a lustrous shine and provides nourishment too. 5. Make an infusion of 1 ounce each of fresh or dried rosemary and sage in 2 cups of water. Let steep for 24 hours, then use daily as a hair rinse. 6. Boil 5 heaping Tbsp dried thyme in 2 cups water for 10 minutes. Strain and cool. Pour 1/2 mixture over clean, damp hair. Mage into scalp, do not rinse. Use second half of solution another day. 7. Instead of shampooing, mage handfuls of baking soda into the hair and scalp to absorb oil and to loosen dead skin on scalp. Rinse thoroughly, use no other shampoos. While initially the hair may seem dry, after several weeks, dandruff will be gone and hair will be smooth and shiny. 8. Mint Rinse Boil: 1 cup water 1 cup apple cider vinegar 1 handful of fresh mint leaves Strain and pour into a container. With fingertips, mage solution into the scalp, let dry without rinsing out. 9. Use the hot oil treatment recipe given on this page. 10. Soothing Herbal Hair Rinse Combine equal parts of dried rosemary, comfrey, witch hazel leaves and nettles to make about 1/2 cup. Add to 2 cups of water in a covered pot. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let steep overnight. Strain. Shampoo and rinse hair then use herb tea for a final rinse to relieve itchy, flaky scalp.
