The Joys of Informed Parenting
Times Computing,  16 June 1999

"FABULOUS!" Time was when such a descriptor used to be a rarity when talking about Indian websites. But these days, new Indian websites capable of holding their own amongst the best in the world are popping up almost every day. And Indiaparenting.com is definitely one of the front-runners for top honours. To say that this website is content-rich is an under-statement; you're treated to over 1,800 pages of solid, credible, useful information on child-rearing - and that's being constantly augmented with new material.

Indiaparenting is the definitive starting point for every Indian parent or parent-to-be (and if you're not already in either of these categories, one look at this fabulous website will probably make you change your mind instantly). Although there's a lot to absorb at one go, you don't feel overwhelmed or lost at any point, given the well-organized and elegant design.

What's the current view on thumb sucking; should you force your child to stop the habit or is it harmless? There's no need to rely on hearsay or follow mum-in- law's advice - read the expert opinion on Indiaparenting; and if you're not satisfied with it, add in your comments or check out what others have to say.

There's much more than thumb-sucking out here of course. Right from the preconception stage, Indiaparenting holds your hand as you go through pregnancy, childbirth and the early years of child rearing. From baby names to party games, not a trick has been missed.

You can also send in queries of your own. Indiaparenting has a distinguished panel of doctors and other experts who will answer you and clear all doubts and worries. Parenting, especially the first time around, can be a daunting task, and it's great to have a friendly, interactive "user manual" like Indiaparenting around - just a click away, no matter what time of night or day.

If a drawback must be stated, then it would have to be the step-motherly treatment meted out to fathers. There is a "Father's Corner" on the website, but it seems to be an afterthought. Perhaps this is due to the preconceived notion that Indian dads think that child rearing is exclusively a mother's job. Not so, these days! Many young Indian dads would like to take on more responsibility, if only they knew how. The Indiaparenting website would do well to fill this gap - and indirectly do beleaguered Indian mothers a favour in the process too!
