Not all Shia became Twelvers, however. In the eighth century, a dispute arose over who should lead the Shia community after the death of the Sixth Imam, Jaafar ibn Muhammad (also known as Jaafar as Sadiq). The group that eventually became the Twelvers followed the teaching of Musa al Kazim; another group followed the teachings of Musa's brother, Ismail, and were called Ismailis. Ismailis are also referred to as Seveners because they broke off from the Shia community over a disagreement concerning the Seventh Imam. Name: Hamdan Country: U.A.E. His disciples who were observing him, followed suit and began weeping too, but not comprehending the reason for this behaviour, they asked him: 'O Spirit of God! What is it that makes you weep?' Isa (a.s.) said: 'Do you know what land this is?' The disciples replied: 'No.' He then said: 'This is the land (Kerbala) on which the son of the Prophet Ahmad (s.a.w.a.) will be killed.' Imam Ali b. Husain (a.s.), Chief of the Worshippers said (while describing the martyrs of Islam): "There is no day like the day of Husain. He was surrounded by 30,000 men, who considered themselves as Muslims. Each one of them sought divine proximity by shedding Husain's blood. And by Allah, Husain, reminded them (of his position) and exhorted them (towards goodness and righteousness) until they killed him with tyranny and oppression owing to their enmity." Imam Sadiq (a.s.) said: As for Ali b. Husain (a.s.), he cried over Husain (a.s.) for twenty years (after the tragedy of Karbala); never would any food be placed before him except that he would begin to weep He in whose presence we (and our miseries) are mentioned and, as a result, his eyes shed tears, Allah shall make his face forbidden upon the Fire of hell. May Allah have mercy upon your tears! Know that you are regarded as one of those who are deeply concerned about us and of those who are happy at our happiness and aggrieved at our sorrow. The reply of one brother why we weep and mourn for Imam Husain(as) always and round the year whenever we remember him. Weeping is in human nature and it is a sign of love and affection. Calamities befall on the beloved ones make a man to weep. "Smile can be given to everyone but tears can only be for the beloved ones." Hazrat Yaqoob (as) wept so much for his entire age for his son Hazrat Yusuf (as) when he was separated by him that he lost his eyes , although Yusuf (as) was alive , Hazrat Mohammad Mustafa (saw) his son Ibrahim was in his last breaths and the eyes of Allah's Apostle (P) started shedding tears. 'Abdur Rahman bin 'Auf said, O Allah's Apostle, even you are weeping! He said, O Ibn 'Auf, this is mercy. Then he wept more and said, The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord. (Ref.: Sahih Al-Bukhari Vol.2, Hadees 390, Book 23, Pg.219) His grandson Hazrat Imam Husain (as) whom he loved so much that he said "Husain is from me and I am from Husain" and when he was informed by Jibrael (as) that he will be matyred in Kerbala , he wept & cried too much . Salami records: I paid a visit to the Prophet's wife Umme Salma and saw her crying with grief. When I asked her what made her weep, she said, I just dreamt that the Prophet (p) had come with his beard and head covered with dust. When I asked him what had made him so full of grief, he told me that he had just returned after seeing his Husain Martyred. (Ref.: Jam'a Tirmizee Pg.166, Mishkat Vol.8 : Pg.189, Mustadrak Vol.4 : Pg.19). Though the H. Prophet (P) had passed away from this world yet he came in the dream of his wife and conveyed the message to his followers that Ashura is a day of the greatest calamity. It is to be mourned and not celeberated. So how can his followers conduct marriages and perform celebrations? And if one conducts, then at least he should avoid claming himself to be a Sunni because Sunni means, one who follows the path of the Holy Prophet (saw) & not the one who goes against him or his sunnat.(teachings)By loving his dear ones we are actually giving him Ajre Risalat , which he has asked for (love of Ahlebait) and not hating or killing them as Yazeed (lanat of Allah be on him did) by killing him and his entire family of 18 and friends and helpers ( total 72 shaheed) by not giving him water for 3 days and after killing him plundering his body by horses hooves and making into pieces and therefater leaving it without kafan for 3 days and making captives his sister Zainab (sa) and womens and daughters and removing their hijab (by force and whipping them and tied all of them in ropes and made them capives and exposing them in bazar to be seen by mens and na mehrams.Who can tolerate to listen to such torture inflicted on beloved Prophet Mohammad Mustafa"s family and near and dear ones being subjected to unhuman and dastardly oppression . Thus after referring the Quran & Sunnah one comes to the conclusion that H. Prophet (P) himself acknowledged weeping to be a mercy and it also pleases Allah (S). If it pleases Allah (S) why does it pinch us? Weeping is a way of expressing thanks to H. Husain (P), for saving Islam and humanity. On this Sorrowful and Mourning Occasion of the Martyrdom Anniversary of Imam Husain (A.S.) and his 72 faithful followers we express our Heartfelt Grief and Condolences to lovers of the Ahlul Bayt (A.S.) and also condolence to his great great Grandfather Hazrat Mohammad Mustafa (saw) and his beloved parents and Masoomeen Hazrat Ali (as) who was also martyred in Masjide Koufa (Iraq)in sajda (in Namaz) and also our condolence to his Mother Hazrat Fatima Zehra(sa)who is the Chief of all the womens of the World and most beloved daughter of Holy Prophet (saw). He was brutally murdered with his whole family and followers by the wicked, Yazid, a Muslim ruler at Karbala in Mecca. This dispute was result of a disagreement among Muslims on the question of succession after the demise of Hazrat Ali, the fourth caliph. In Rajasthan as in other parts of the country, devout Muslims, particularly those belonging to the Shia sect celebrate Muharram with a lot of devotion. Muharram is celebrated as a mark of respect for Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad. They commemorate his martyrdom. Muharram is one of these four sanctified months, with which the Muslims begin their lunar Hijrah Calendar. Muharram is so called because it is a sacred month and to confirm its sanctity one can read the Allaah's words "so wrong not yourselves therein…" mean do not wrong yourselves in these sacred months, because sin in these months is worse than in other months. Though it is an occasion for mourning, a colorful memorial procession is led through the streets of Delhi, Agra, Lucknow and Hyderabad, to name a few. Decorated and brightly colored tazias of bamboo and paper are carried as replicas of the martyr’s tomb. The procession proceeds to the frenzied beating of drums and heart-renting cries of ‘Hussain, Hussain !’ A peculiar practice here is that young men armed with leather whips often lash themselves repeatedly. So below information is for Muslims & not for MUNAFIQ. Certainly, the true followers (Shia) of these Imams will be the real prosperous on the day of resurrection. Thus being a Shia does not mean anything, unless we know the Shia of whom. Allah mentioned in Quran that Some of His righteous servants were Shia of His other righteous servants. An example was Prophet Abraham who was mentioned in Quran specifically as the Shia of Noah: "And most surely Abraham was among the Shia of him (i.e., Noah)" (Quran 37:83) (Notice that the word "Shia" is explicitly used, letter by letter, in the above verse as well as the following verse.) In another verse, Quran talks about the Shia of Moses versus the enemies of Moses: "And he (Moses) went into the city at a time when people (of the city) were not watching, so he found therein two men fighting, one being of his Shia and the other being his enemy, and the one who was of his Shia cried out to him for help against the one who was of his enemy" (Quran 28:15) The Messenger of Allah said to Ali: "Glad tiding O Ali! Verily you and your companions and your Shia (followers) will be in Paradise." Our sanctity was violated and our children & women-folk were made captives. Our tents were set ablaze and whatever was found therein was looted. And they did not even honour the relation, which we share with the Prophet of Allah (s.a.w.s). The day on which Imam Husain (a.s) was martyred has injured our eyes and our tears are constantly flowing since then. Our dear ones were dishonoured on the plains of grief and trials (Karbo bala) making way for sorrows and sufferings until Qiyamah. Thus, sorrowful people should mourn over it (the martyrdom of Imam Husain), for weeping upon it nullifies the major sins." Then he said, "When the month of Moharram would approach, no one would see my father (Imam Moosa al Kazim) ever laughing until the tenth, and grief would prevail upon him. And the tenth would be the day of sorrow, grief and lamenting, and he would say: This is the day when Husain (a.s) was massacred." Some Traditions on Imam al-Husain (AS) In this article, I would like to present some of the traditions recorderded in the Sunni collections of the traditions Regarding him: The Messenger of Allah said: "Al-Hasan and al-Husain are the chiefs of the youth of Paradise and Fatimah is the chief of their women." Name: S.A.M.Basheer Country: Qatar Comment: Muharram By Mufti Taqi Usmani - Fasting During the Month - The Day of 'Ashurah' - Misconceptions and Baseless Traditions - Lamentations and Mourning Muharram is the month with which the Muslims begin their lunar Hijrah Calendar. It is one of the four sanctified months about which the Holy Quran says, "The number of the months according to Allah is twelve (mentioned) in the Book of Allah on the day He created heavens and the earth. Among these (twelve months) there are four sanctified." These four months, according to the authentic traditions, are Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab. All the commentators of the Holy Quran are unanimous on this point, because the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, in his sermon on the occasion of his last Hajj, declared: "One year consists of twelve months, of which four are sanctified months, three of them are in sequence; Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab." The specific mention of these four months does not mean that any other month has no sanctity, because the month of Ramadan is admittedly the most sanctified month in the year. But these four months were specifically termed as sanctified months for the simple reason that their sanctity was accepted even by the pagans of Makkah. In fact, every month, out of the twelve, is originally equal to the other, and there is no inherent sanctity that may be attributed to one of them in comparison to the other months. When Allah Almighty chooses a particular time for His special blessings, the same acquires sanctity out of His grace. Thus, the sanctity of these four months was recognized right from the days of Sayyidina Ibrahim, alayhi salam. Since the Pagans of Makkah attributed themselves to Sayyidina Ibrahim, alayhi salam, they observed the sanctity of these four months and despite their frequent tribal battles, they held it unlawful to fight in these months. In the Shariah of our Noble Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, the sanctity of these months was upheld and the Holy Quran referred to them as the "sanctified months". Muharram has certain other characteristics special to it, which are specified below. Fasting During the Month The Noble Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, has said: 'The best fasts after the fasts of Ramadan are those of the month of Muharram." Although the fasts of the month of Muharram are not obligatory, yet one who fasts in these days out of his own will is entitled to a great reward by Allah Almighty. The Hadith cited above signifies that the fasts of the month of Muharram are most rewardable ones among the Nafl or voluntary fasts. The Hadith does not mean that the award promised for fasts of Muharram can be achieved only by fasting for the whole month. On the contrary, each fast during this month has merit. Therefore, one should avail of this opportunity as much as he can. Back to Top The Day of 'Ashurah' Although Muharram is a sanctified month as a whole, yet, the 10th day of Muharram is the most sacred among all its days. The day is named 'Ashurah'. According to the Holy Companion Ibn 'Abbas, Radi-Allahu anhu. The Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, when migrated to Madinah, found that the Jews of Madinah used to fast on the 10th day of Muharram. They said that it was the day on which the Holy Prophet Musa (Moses), alayhis salam, and his followers crossed the Red Sea miraculously and the Pharaoh was drowned in its waters. On hearing this from the Jews, the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, said, "We are more closely rotated to Musa, alayhi salam, than you," and directed the Muslims to fast on the day of 'Ashura'. (Abu Dawood) It is also reported in a number of authentic traditions that in the beginning, fasting on the day of 'Ashura' was obligatory for the Muslims. It was later that the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory and the fast on the day of 'Ashura' was made optional. Sayyidina 'Aisha, Radi-Allahu anha, has said: "When the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, came to Madinah, he fasted on the day of 'Ashura' and directed the people to fast. But when the fasts of Ramadan were made obligatory, the obligation of fasting was confined to Ramadan and the obligatory nature of the fast of 'Ashura' was abandoned. Whoever so desires should fast on it and any other who so likes can avoid fasting on it." (Sunan Abu Dawud) However, the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, used to fast on the day of 'Ashura' even after the fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory. Abdullah ibn Musa, Radi-Allahu anhu, reports that the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, preferred the fast of 'Ashura' on the fasts of other days and preferred the fasts of Ramadhaan on the fast of 'Ashura'. (Bukhari and Muslim) In short, it is established through a number of authentic ahadith that fasting on the day of 'Ashura' is Sunnah of the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, and makes one entitled to a great reward. According to another Hadith, it is more advisable that the fast of 'Ashura' should either be preceded or followed by another fast. It means that one should fast two days: the 9th and 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th. The reason of this additional fast as mentioned by the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, is that the Jews used to fast on the day of'Ashura alone, and the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, wanted to distinguish the Muslim way of fasting from that of Jews. Therefore, he advised the Muslims to add another fast to that of 'Ashura'. Some traditions signify another feature of the day of 'Ashura. According to these traditions, one should be more generous to his family by providing more food to them on this day as compared to other days. These traditions are not very authentic according to the science of Hadith. Yet, some Scholars like Baihaqi and Ibn Hibban have accepted them as reliable. What is mentioned above is all that is supported through authentic sources about Ashura. Back to Top Misconceptions and Baseless Traditions However, there are some legends and misconceptions with regard to 'Ashura' that have managed to find their way into the minds of the ignorant, but have no support of authentic Islamic sources, some very common of them are these: This is the day on which Adam, alayhi salam, was created. This is the day when Ibrahim, alayhi salam, was born. This is the day when Allah accepted the repentance of Sayyidina Adam, alayhi salam. This is the day when Qiyaamah (doomsday) will take place. Whoever takes bath on the day of 'Ashura' will never get ill. All these and other similar whims and fancies are totally baseless and the traditions referred to in this respect are not worthy of any credit. Some people take it as Sunnah to prepare a particular type of meal on the day of 'Ashura'. This practice, too, has no basis in the authentic Islamic sources. Some other people attribute the sanctity of 'Ashura' to the martyrdom of Sayyidna Husain, Radi-Allahu anhu, during his battle with the Syrian army. No doubt, the martyrdom of Sayyidina Husain, Radi-Allahu anhu, is one of the most tragic episodes of our history. Yet, the sanctity of 'Ashura' cannot be ascribed to this event for the simple reason that the sanctity of 'Ashura' was established during the days of the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, much earlier than the birth of Sayyidna Husain, Radi-Allahu anhu. On the contrary, it is one of the merits of Sayyidna Husain, Radi-Allahu anhu, that his martyrdom took place on the day of 'Ashura'. Another misconception about the month of Muharram is that it is an evil or unlucky month, for Sayyidna Husain, Radi-Allahu anhu, was killed in it. It is for this misconception that people avoid holding marriage ceremonies in the month of Muharram. This is again a baseless concept, which is contrary to the express teachings of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah. If the death of an eminent person on a particular day renders that day unlucky for all times to come, one can hardly find a day of the year free from this bad luck because every day is associated with the demise of some eminent person. The Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, have liberated us from such superstitious beliefs. Back to Top Lamentations and Mourning Another wrong practice related to this month is to hold the lamentation and mouming ceremonies in the memory of martyrdom of Sayyidna Husain, Radi-Allahu anhu. As mentioned earlier, the event of Karbala is one of the most tragic events of our history, but the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, has forbidden us from holding the mourning ceremonies on the death of any person. The people of jahiliyyah (ignorance) used to mourn over their deceased through loud lamentations, by tearing their clothes and by beating their cheeks and chests. The Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, stopped the Muslims from doing all this and directed them to observe patience by saying "Innaa lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji'oon". A number of authentic Ahaadith are available on the subject. To quote only one of them: "He is not from our group who slaps his checks, tears his clothes and cries in the manner of the people of jahiliyyah." (Sahih Bukhari) All the authentic jurists are unanimous on the point that the mourning of this type is impermissible. Even Sayyidna Husain, Radi-Allahu anhu, shortly before his demise, had advised his beloved sister Sayyidah Zainab, Radi-Allahu anha, at not to mourn over his death in this manner. He said, "My dear sister! I swear upon you that in case I die you shall not tear your clothes, nor scratch your face, nor curse anyone for me or pray for your death." (Al-Kamil, ibn Kathir vol. 4 pg. 24) It is evident from this advice of Sayyidna Husain, Radi-Allahu anhu, that this type of mourning is condemned even by the blessed person for the memory of whom these mourning ceremonies are held. Every Muslim should avoid this practice and abide by the teachings of the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, and his beloved grand child Sayyidna Husain, Radi-Allahu anhu. This is a brief summary about The month of "Holy Muharram" and about the story of Karbala. On the 10th day of month Muharram Hazrat Husain(a.s.) join his grandfather Holy Prophet Muhammed(s.a.w.a.w.s) and his father Hazrat Ali(a.s.) and his brother Hazrat Hassan (a.s.) in the Heaven. The story of Karbala is so hurtful and when you read it your start crying. But I am so happy about this article, and I know that there are people who knows what is really Muharram and Karbala. Name: Syed Ajaz Mehdi Naqvi Country: India Comment: In the name Allah, the most merciful, the most high Salutations to the Martyrs of Karbala In the history of the mankind, there is no other event is as grievous as the event or tragedy of Karbala. This event was happened on the 10th day of Moharram called Aashoora, it was a war between the force of the truthfuls and evil ones. The destiny of Islam was at the point of the sword but the sacrifices from the side of the force of Islam who's leader was none other than the grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammed(s.a.w.a.w.s) Al-Husain ibn Ali ibn Abu Talib(a.s.), saved Islam forever. Islam was saved because of the innumberable sacrifices from the side of Al-Husain(a.s.), sacrifices of children, young and old men from the side of the truthfuls, and on the other hand the forces of evils who's leader was cursed Yazid the son of damned Muawiya ibn damned Abu Sufian were trying their best to destroy Islam. For the information if anyone has any objection why I have called Yazid, Abu Sufian and Muawiya the cursed one then for his satisfaction I am qouting the Hadith of the Holy Prophet Muhammed(s.a.w.a.w.s) from the book of history from the Sunni fiqh, History by Jarir Tabari, one of the eminent ulema of Sunni fiqh, who wrote: "The Holy Prophet saw Abu Sufyan riding a donkey. Mu'awiya was pulling it from the front, and his son, Yazid, was pushing it from behind. The Prophet said, 'Curse be upon the rider, the puller, and the pusher.'I hope no one has any objection now. So the force of God, who's leader was Al-Husain was consist of only 72 soldiers, women and children, and the forces of evils and cursed ones which were led by damned Yazid were in large number. But atlast victory always come to the side of Allah, Allah is most high, so Hazrat Husain(a.s.) became victorious forever, and there is a permanent curse on the damned Yazid and his force and to the enemies of Islam forever . . . According to Shia fiqh the fast on the day of Ashoora ie 10th Moharram is haaraam. Salutions to the Martyrs of Karbala Name: iram iqbal Country: United Kingdom Comment: thank you for helping me? Name: S Country: usa Comment: Wrestlers and dancers enact scenes depicting the battle at Kerbala. <-- i just wanted to comment on that statement, which is completely false. During Muharram there is no "merriment" or "encating" of scenes of any kind, let alone there being dancers, that is just absurd. I do not know where you got that idea from, but i suggest you re-evaluate your sources. Muharram is a time of mourning our religious figures' deaths, and it certainly does not have anything to do with enactment of scenes by "wrestlers and dancers." Name: umay Country: united kingdom Comment: A.O.A i would just like to say there is not enough on what actually happened in Karbala to get the message across you need to have a more detailed story of how th grandsons of the prophet were beheaded (asthaghfirullah) this would be useful because there are still some people who don't know the true story thank you and Jazakallah
