It is not a good thing to force the child to study. Sometime kids do feel bored of studies so parents should excuse them. Remember in your childhood how you felt when you had to study for long hours. Start little by little. Ask them first to start studying just for half hour and increase 15 minutes every day. In this way they will get used to studying.

I agree with Hiten as it is necessary to find out the root cause for why the child is not willing to study. Forcing the child or leaving it up to the child whether to study or not will definitely make the situation worse.

The best thing is to encourage the child to study by giving him or her some rewards. It is not good to leave it up to the child as it will make the situation worse. Parents should try to find out if why the child is not willing to study or is he or she coping with some learning disorder.
