Is it important for children to be fluent in their MOTHER TONGUE?

Name: Dr. Suresh & Mrs. Shobha
Country: india
Comment:
Yes, It is very important. I say every child must cry first in his/her mother language. Mother language is the life. If mother is the life than it is must to know that person can not be a "live" without mother languge. I wonder in USA how many children are really knowing mother language? How many parents are spending their time to teach their children? Dollars are killing every thing. Give time to teach them their mother language.

MY MOTHER TONGUE IS KONKANI. IT S VERY IMPORTANT FOR KIDS TO KNOW IT ESPECIALLY HINDI BECAUSE THIS NOT ONLY MAKES THEM PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN OR A GOAN BUT THEY WILL NEED TO CONVERSE WITH THE PEOPLE OF INDIA WHO DON'T KNOW THE LANGUAGE THAT THE KIDS KNOW.NOT ONLY THAT WHEN THEY GO TO PLACES OUTSIDE INDIA THEY CAN JUST BE PROUD THAT THEY KNOW MANY LANGUAGES LIKE HINDI,ENGLISH AND KONKANI.

Yes it is important for kids to know their mother tongue. In their childhood it is much easier for them to learn many languages. When they start going to schol they learn the hindi and english automatically. So it is the parents duty to make them learn their mother tongue at home. It makes them have an identity for themselves.

The more languages you know, the more enriched you are. Nothing like being able to literature in the original language it was written. Your mother tounge adds value to your life. Little things like rhymes that are so particular to your community/ background. I look upon it as only a value addition as I look upon knowledge of any other language.

Language or for that case Mother tounge should not be forced on to some one. It is for individual to decide what to learn and what not. Language should be just a medium of communication.
Name: Priya
Country: India
Comment:
Knowing any number of languages is an asset and your mother-tongue is one of the easiest to learn. It's easy for kids to learn to atleast converse in it. And in the case of bi-lingual couples, I think the kid should be taught both languages, only then will he/she benefit from being exposed to the rich culture and tradition of both and he'll also be one-up on those who are proficient in only one of those languages. He could even be a communicating link!!

Comment:
Yes,language is the main medium of communication.to know one's mother tongue is the first stepping stone to this.it is a foundation to one's upbringing about the culture and surroundings.and in a country with such unity among diversity,it is essential to establish one's own identity and roots while respecting your own language and that of others too.

Mother Tounge is the language where one can express oneself most freely. It also reflects the culture and the essesnce of the place / region you belong to. There is a natural love for the place / language / values and the system in which are born in. "Language is the spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions" and mother tounge makes it more powerful.

The common fad these days is to speak english only, and that too with an accent. Becasue that is what is considered smart. I would say that just goes to show you how shallow the value have become. And it is the parents that are to blame for it.
