Harmful Effects of Junk Food on Children's Health

Harmful Effects of Junk Food on Children's Health
Eating junk food frequently can give rise to many health problems in children. So, parents must take right steps to control junk food consumption in children. Have a quick look at the harmful effects of junk food on children’s health.
There are multiple reasons why children crave for junk food, main reason being the taste. Especially the children who are not much worried about their health at any instance will opt for junk food as they are appetizing. Regular in-take of such fattening stuff results in addiction for them leading to many complications like obesity, high blood pressure, fatigue, diabetes, digestive disorder etc. At times, this can even affect their performance in school and extracurricular activities.
Every parent has the duty to tune their children in the right way when there is a demand of junk food. It is a big challenge to keep the children away from those lesser nutritious foods. Recognizing the facts about fatty food items and replacing those delicious content with something healthy is really a nice take over. It is good to be aware of the harmful effects that greatly disturb the health of children. Parents must discuss how junk foods affect the body so that they can help them to avoid it as much as possible.

1. Risk of Obesity

According to a study conducted by researchers, it is found that fast-food feasting in children was allied with several risky ancestors for obesity. As per this study, children ate junk food mostly consumed higher amount of calories, carbohydrates, fats and supplementary sugars. The fats that are used for flavoring and toppings get easily accumulated in body and even this result in heart related problems. Due to these fats children tend to feel lethargic and are less involved in any physical activities.

2. Fatigue and Paleness

Essential nutrients like vitamins and proteins that are most wanted and supportive for a healthy body are not available in junk foods. This leads to an abnormal functioning of all the systems in the body. Children may feel full and satisfied with what they have had, but it makes them puny and drained after a while. Later, they can even suffer from chronic diseases. Sometimes, the daily activities will also become a daunting task for them as the junk food lowers the energy level very soon.

3. Digestive Problems

Children addicted to junk foods will suffer from digestive problems like irritable bowel syndrome and gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). As the fatty items are deep fried, the oil used gets dumped on the walls of the stomach which increases the production of acid. Spices deposited over here create an irritation on the stomach lining and worsen the digestion process. As the fiber content is very less in junk foods, problems like hemorrhoids and constipation increase.

4. Fluctuations in Blood Sugar Levels

High refined sugar is present in all kinds of junk foods that wield stress on children’smetabolism. Due to the lack of enough of carbohydrates and proteins in fattened stuffs, blood sugar level drops down suddenly after the consumption. This case will make to crave for junk foods more often. Intake of junk foods for one week continuously is well sufficient to activate memory weakening and the presence of fat content slows down the capability to learn new skills.

5. Low Self-Esteem and Downheartedness

For a growing child, the crown of self esteem and confidence is a must to achieve many things in her life. Consumption of junk food on a regular basis will surely have a negative impact on these aspects. Failure to focus in the class, lack of patience and poor education abilities are some of the negative results caused due to higher consumption of fattening foods. Such things may give rise to low self-esteem and downheartedness which can affect the mental health of children.
Thus, instead of turning towards the unhealthy junk foods, simply help the children to switch over to all healthy food items in order to avoid health issues. Taking extra effort to cook up some delicious and nutritious food at home for the family stands out to be very good option to keep the children fit and strong.

What are the effects of junk food on the health of children? Is it safe to consume junk food once in a week? How often should we allow children to eat junk food? Discuss here.
