 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have been married for 3 years and we have still not been able to conceive. One of the problems we have is that the sperm comes out right after intercourse. Could this be the reason why my wife is still not getting pregnant?

Pratik (Groningen, Dubai)

A: If you have been trying to have a baby & have not used any contraception for 2 years & still not conceived, then you both need to see a gynecologist and get some basic tests done to ensure that there is no problem.

Dr. Asha Paranjpe

Q: Can I pass urine immediately after intercourse ? Will it stop me from getting pregnant soon? Please clear my doubt.

Mahima (Gohati, India)

A: Passing urine after intercourse will not interfere in the process of getting pregnant.

Dr. Asha Paranjpe

Q: I got married three months back, and we are not doing any family planning as such, we both want a child as early as possible. But the problem is when we have intercourse, after releasing the sperm into vagina when I take out the penis, sperm also comes out, it doesn't remains inside the vagina, I don't understand why is this happening. Please let me know.

Kiran (Konkan, India)

A: It is quite normal for the semen to come out after intercourse. If you are keen on a pregnancy then make sure your wife lies down with a pillow under the hips for 15 - 20 minutes after intercourse.

Dr. Asha Paranjpe

Q: I am planning a baby but am not able to ejaculate in my wife's vagina. It comes out very easily while masturbating. Can you suggest something?

Paramjeet (Mumbai, India)

A: You can see a urologist or a psychologist who will advise you.

Dr. Asha Paranjpe

Q: We are trying for our second child. This time, the reading of my follicular studies on the 12th day show: Rt ovary :2.7/1.465cm Left ovary :Not growing Endometrium:1.0cm What are the chances of my getting pregnant this cycle?

Rishika (Mumbai, India)

A: It is necessary to know if this follicle has ruptured on the 14th day or not. If it has, then having relations around the 14th day can increase your chances of getting pregnant.

Q: Could you please tell me the difference between a clinical thermometer and a basal thermometer? How is the Basal temperature taken? We are trying to conceive since the last 4 years and the doctors have said there is no problem. I got myomectamy done (removal of fibroid) last month. We are very eager to have a child. Kindly help. What type of food should we consume? What should we do?

Rakesh (Snowdon, U.K)

A: Both are the same, you have to take the temperature in the morning as soon as your wife gets out of bed on a clinical thermometer. This is called basal temperature. No food restrictions now, but please avoid papayas.

Q: My wife and I are both 30 plus. We had a failed IVF recently and have decided to wait or adopt. However, while we are waiting, I would like to push the semen thru a vaginal applicator during the fertile period. (My penis size is smaller than usual: 5" erect). Putting a pillow under wife's hips is uncomfortable (esp. for the 20-30 minutes after coitus). Can I masturbate, and then push my penis in as deep as possible?

Rajeev (Aurangabad, India)

A: Size does not matter. The semen spurts out, and the sperm will find their own way. Forcing the penis in deeper does not help - and will just cause your wife pain. Yes, you can do an 'artificial insemination' yourself, but I don't understand why you are punishing yourself by resorting to these techniques. Self-insemination is useful for men who have erectile dysfunction (impotence). You can use an ordinary disposable 5 ml plastic syringe and squirt the semen into the vagina after it has liquefied (which takes about 15-25 minutes).

Q: Can implantation bleeding happen before ovulation? Can an egg be released before ovulation? How long can sperm survive in a woman's body?

Shivani (Aurangabad, USA)

A: The answer to your first two questions is NO. Sperms can survive in the women's body for 16 to 20 hours.

Q: I'm married for almost a month now. My hymen has not yet broken. Will I get pregnant if the semen is discharged in the vulva?

Kiran (Banglore, India)

A: Yes, you can get pregnant.
