Why Do Children Brag?
Nehal was at school and she turned
to the girl next to her and said "I got a 93% and you only got 70%."
"You always brag, Nehal," said one
boy.
Why do children brag? Children might brag for many reasons.
First of all they might lack self-confidence and brag to make themselves
feel better. By projecting faults on others and uplifting their own
spirits, they begin to feel that they actually are something important
in this world. Bragging also occurs among children because they might
not know their place in school or at home. By bragging, they will
get attention and will feel they belong somewhere. Children could
brag about anything ranging from grades to sports and to wealth.
If children are lonely, they might be under the wrong assumption that by
bragging, people will like them better and they will make more friends.
What you can do? If your child brags, you have to help your child gain his self-confidence. You must show him that everyone will like him more if he does not brag and he does not need to brag to get attention and feel wanted. Bragging is a disease and it is a vicious one. If your child does not brag, you must make sure he does not lose his self-confidence because of other children who do brag. Show him that he does not need to brag about his achievements in order to be appreciated. Also by praising your child at home, your child will feel less of a need to brag and will not be affected by children who do brag because he knows that you think he is a great person. Children are very vulnerable and they need love and encouragement. When your child brags, he is sometimes indirectly asking people to notice him and feel proud of him. Show your child what he means to you and how proud you really are. Bragging is something that children
engage in. It should be stopped as soon as possible because as children
get older, they might brag more and it will be harder to stop. Bragging
is a very unsocial manner and can hurt your child in many ways.
