Weight Gain (Inadequate) I seem to have lost weight in the first trimester Thanks to morning sickness, some
women are too queasy to eat in the first trimester. They may not gain much
weight and some even lose weight. Fortunately, the foetus' need for calories
and nutrients is quite low at this stage. However, in the later stages
of pregnancy, if you do not gain any weight for two consecutive weeks,
you should consult your doctor.
I don't seem to be gaining enough weight Low weight gain later in the pregnancy (after the first trimester) is not a good sign. It could indicate one of two complications: intrauterine growth retardation or it could indicate oligohydramnios (less amniotic fluid around the foetus). Both of these conditions are related, in that oligohydramnious could very well be the cause for intrauterine growth retardation, or vice versa. If the intrauterine growth retardation is a result of poor nutrition, it is important that the mother get optimum nutrition out of whatever she eats, and takes a lot of rest.
