Ovulation Predictor Test Kits What are ovulation predictor test kits Ovulation predictor 'do-it-yourself'
kits can be bought from any major chemist. They allow you to forecast with
remarkable accuracy when ovulation is going to occur in the next 24 hours.
How does the ovulation predictor test work The test measures the level of Luteinizing
Hormone (L.H.) in an early morning urine sample by using a specially designed
urine dipstick which changes colour when exposed to increasing amounts
of L.H. Ovulation is preceded by a surge in the level of L.H. When the
L.H.-surge occurs there is an easily detectable colour change indicating
that ovulation is likely to occur within the next 24 hours. Intercourse
during this period has a good chance of resulting in conception. Very detailed
instructions are provided with each kit, as it is important that the 1
to 7 days of testing each month is done at the correct time of the cycle.
Maintain a record of each month's tests. As a matter of interest, you could
check if the temperature rise indicated in your B.B.T. chart occurs just
after you get a positive result in your ovulation predictor.
What are the advantages of the ovulation predictor test kits The drawback of both the B.B.T.
Chart and of progesterone assays is that
they can only tell a person if ovulation has occurred, not if it is about
to occur. This is the gap that is filled by ovulation predictor tests.
The fact that you can tell in advance that you are going to ovulate, reduces
the trial and error element in the process of trying to conceive. However,
these kits are fairly expensive, although cheaper refill kits are available.
