Chennai City

Arignar Anna Zoological Park

Located at Vandalur, which is 30 kilometres from Chennai City, Anna Zoological Park is considered to be one of the biggest in South-East Asia. Here most wildlife lives in large areas surrounded by moats. This provides for a more natural environment. There are more than 170 species of mammals, birds, and reptiles at the zoo. There are battery operated trains that take visitors around key locations in the zoo if they do not want to do walk.

Dakshinachitra

Dakshinachitra is a cross-cultural living museum, which showcases a mixture of artisans working and exhibits to see. It is located on the East Coast Road at Muttukadu—21 kilometres south of Chennai. Literally translated, Dakshinachitra means 'a picture of the South', and this is exactly what this unique establishment presents. Dakshinachitra was established to promote handicrafts from South Indian States like Tamil Nadu and Kerala and also to highlight the lifestyle and culture of these states. It comprises a number of mock houses in a village theme. Each house is built to imitate a traditional house and houses traditional elements such as pottery or musical instruments. Each house is thus a small museum showcasing the traditional life of each region. This village is not just a museum, but also a place where tourists can observe handicrafts being made and buy them.

Marina Beach

Marina Beach is one of India's longest beaches, stretching for about 13 kilometres. The Marina beach connects Fort St. George with Santhome, with a 5-kilometre stretch. An ideal way to end a day of touring Chennai is by taking in the cool sea breeze here. On the Marina, you will also find the Victory War Memorial at Anna Park, commemorating lives lost in World Wars I and II. Other notable structures nearby include the Anna Samadhi dedicated to C N Annadurai, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Have you been to Chennai? Are there other places in Chennai that you believe a tourist should see? Do you think that more states should follow Chennai's example, by setting up cultural villages like Dakshinachitra? To share your experiences, views and tips with us, click here.
