Crib Death
SIDS or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is said to have occurred when an infant under the age of one year suddenly passes away in his sleep, for no apparent reason. The cause of death remains unexplained even after a thorough examination and autopsy. While research has not been able to determine a cause, a conclusive study recently conducted by Chicago Infant Mortality Study has determined that the risk of SIDS is far greater for those infants who sleep on their tummies. The results have been supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lending a strong credibility to the findings. Sleeping on the stomach was believed to slightly increase the risk of SIDS, and it has always been recommended that infants be encouraged to sleep on their backs. However, this study has proved that stomach sleeping is one of the major factors leading to SIDS - if not the prime cause. Thus, it is imperative that parents
discourage their infants from sleeping on their stomachs.
