Week-by-Week Fetal Development Week 6 Hey, what is that sticking its neck out? Looks like the baby has a neck. That is not all, it has a brain, a small bump that looks like the beginning of a head with small little indentations that will soon take the shape of the eyes and ears. You can just about make out the shape of the mouth and jaw to match the makings of the very early stages of the digestive system. This is followed by the formation of the abdominal as well as the chest cavities where the heart is beginning to develop. At this point it looks like a small bulge and consists of just two chambers out of the expected four. This week also marks the development of the umbilical cord along with the accompanying blood vessels that help connect this precious little one to you. Your baby now has a full-fledged bloodstream that has just about begun to circulate blood. You can now see a hint of the four limbs that have begun to appear in the shape of little buds in their appropriate places. The bottom half of its body is still
undeveloped and tends to look like a tail whereas the formation of the
back is much faster than that of the front causing the embryo to look bent
like the curve of a half moon. Your baby is now one quarter of an inch
or 6mm in size and nobody has guessed that you are pregnant as yet. You
have a way to go before you show.
