Ensuring a Healthy Baby I fell down on my belly today. Could my baby be hurt If you are having contractions, vaginal
bleeding, abdominal tenderness or leakage of amniotic fluid, then there
is something to worry about. But obviously this will not be the case in
a fall. Unless you have fallen on a very sharp object (that has required
you to go to the hospital), it is very rare for the baby to be hurt because
it is well cushioned in the amniotic sac. Surrounded by amniotic fluid,
tough membranes, an elastic uterus and a strong abdomen, guarded with muscles
and bones, your baby is absolutely safe. Your baby could be hurt only if
you yourself have sustained serious injuries.
I do not think my baby is kicking, but I feel regular spasms on and off This could well be your baby's hiccups.
It could happen several times a day up to a stretch of 20 minutes. There
is no cause for concern as hiccups are not a source of discomfort to babies
as they are to adults.
How do I ensure that my baby does not have a low birth weight According to studies in the U.S., 7 out of every 100 babies are low birthweight (under 5 pounds 8 ounces) and 1 out of these have very low birth weight (3 pounds 5 ounces). This is because the mother may be a user of drugs, tobacco, or alcohol; may have poor nutrition and antenatal care; or may even be suffering from maternal illnesses or could be a carrier of genetic disorders. Some of these factor responsible for low birthweight babies are controllable and others are not. But in almost all cases, an excellent diet and adequate antenatal care are known to help. A good way to find out whether your baby is growing normally is through an ultrasound. If the ultrasound test indicates any problems with the baby, you and your doctor can take steps to discover the cause and correct it as soon as possible.
