Child's Healthcare

Drugs and My Children

Remedial Courses

Though there is no ONE steadfast remedy for children's drug abuse there are few things to keep in mind. Parents should enquire about local drug rehab programs. Any rehab program usually involves starting with a blood chemistry analysis. This helps to identify natural vitamin or mineral deficiency, which may sustain a craving for drugs. A rehab program will help your child to gradually phase out his addiction with medication and use support groups to lower the chances of it reoccurring.

Apart from a rehab program as a parent you can consult with your family doctor to identify specific drug problems and remedies. Also talk to your child's school guidance counsellor for possible remedial actions. Consult with your psychologist to find out if your child needs psychotherapy to ensure that he or she does not suffer a relapse. Also conduct online research. Visit online parenting websites or support groups as they help in getting anonymous information and advice especially when you don't want the world to know that your child is having a drug problem.

Prevention

Prevention is always better than the cure. As a responsible parent, you will be able to guide your children both directly and indirectly to bolster their chances against taking drugs. Parents need to look out for overtly unusual behaviour amongst their children and take cautionary steps to ensure that their children do not fall prey to drug abuse. There are many ways in which you might do this, such as by setting an example, helping them develop extracurricular activities, reasoning with your kids and implementing effective corrective measures.

  1. Develop Extracurricular Activities
Children who participate in extracurricular activities, and who are naturally more gregarious by nature, tend to be less susceptible to drug abuse. Since they have acceptance in these spheres, they do not feel the need to gain approval through drug abuse. These children develop good interpersonal skills.

Try to ensure that your children are involved in as many different activities as possible. This will bring them more opportunities to interact with their peers and other adults. Encourage participation in sports and other activities as the means for your children to vent their frustrations and pent up feelings.

  2. Reason out with your kids
Your children are independent individuals who are capable of taking their own decisions. Sit down and discuss with them about the positive as well as harmful aspects of drugs. Be non-judgmental and credible as far as possible.

  3. Disciplinary actions
When reprimanding your child with regard to drug abuse, see that the correction is given in a constructive manner. Lecturing your child, grounding him or revoking his socialising rights by confiscating his cell phone may merely fuel his rebellious streak. When censuring, show children that you care about their welfare first and foremost. Be consistent with your training and discipline, and beware of double standards.
