It's Children's Day!

There's not really a whole lot of complicated history attached to this day. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's was very fond of children, who affectionately termed him Chacha Nehru.

November 14th was his birthday, and in honour of Pandit Nehru's love for kids, we celebrate National Children's Day on this date. Schools in India usually organize a cultural programme in the morning, and the kids get the rest of the day off.

Here's what you can do with your child to celebrate this special day - and week - and make it a memorable one. There's a special treat planned for your child every day, for a week. Go on, indulge her! She will not be a child for much longer.

Thursday, 14th November

Don't just let today be the same as any ordinary day. Take your child for a special treat. It doesn't have to be any place fancy. You could even take her to the neighbouring parlour for ice-cream. You should, however, explain that you're taking her out as a special treat because it's children's day. Let her feel special.

Friday, 15th November

Make your child a card with her photograph on the cover. She will cherish it for years to come! If possible, after she has seen it, frame it and hang it up in her room.

Saturday, 16th November

Before she turns in for the night, read a story aloud to her. Take a print-out of this interesting story she is sure to love.

Sunday, 17th November

Is your child creatively inclined? Does she like to draw and paint? Then why don't both of you try your hands at vegetable painting? You both have the entire day free after all. Here's all you need:

  • A chart paper
  • Ladyfingers, potatoes and carrots
  • Poster paints, a palette and some water
  • A worn toothbrush
Dip the toothbrush into the paints and let her spray the sheet, for a wonderful spray-painted effect. The chart is now ready, awaiting your little artist's masterpiece!

Cut the ladyfingers into halves. When you dip them in the paint and stamp them on the chart paper, they make lovely flowers.

Chop the potatoes into halves. Carve a simple star at the end of one, so it stands out like a stamp. Similarly, carve a flower into the other half of the potato. In this manner, you can create large, prominent stamps. Use your imagination! Carve a triangle, a square, a fish or even a crescent moon into the potatoes and watch your child stamp away in joy!

Monday, 18th November

Has your child entered the Colour the Picture contest? Make sure she does! Who knows, maybe she'll be the lucky winner!

Tuesday, 19th November

Gift your child an audio cassette of timeless nursery rhymes and songs. Any nursery rhyme you can think of finds a proud place in these audiocassettes. Priced at Rs. 35, they're a steal! So place your order now!

Wednesday, 20th November

Kids love camping. Give your child the feel of being in a tent right at home. All you need is a bed sheet. Hook it up so it forms a tent or even a make-shift roof, invite a few of your child's friends over and serve sandwiches, pakoras and something to drink. They would probably never have had so much fun!
