When we are decorating our home, most of us tend to ignore the kitchen area. The kitchen is where you will be spending a lot of time. Even though you may have a cook, part-time or full-time, needless to say, you will require to step into the kitchen every now and again to supervise, whip up something tasty for the kids, or to help out when entertaining.
Think of the kitchen as a workplace, and decorate it accordingly. After all, you wouldn't want to work in a dump or in a dull and dreary place, would you?
Light
Making sure your kitchen is well lit is of utmost importance. After all, you don't want to confuse the sugar with salt, do you? In any case, you require sufficient lighting especially when cleaning out the daals, sorting ingredients and in general working around in the kitchen.
Space
When planning a home, people often strive to make bigger living rooms and smaller kitchens. Even if the only person spending time in the kitchen is your maid, you still require it to be somewhat spacious so she can move around. If you want to compromise on space, try to make the kitchen long and narrow. Square kitchens are a waste of space, unless you have an island or a table in the center. This is because shelves placed along the lengths of the wall are what you will be using the most.
Island
If you have a square kitchen with space in the center, consider building an island in the center. You can then use the top of the island for other tasks like chopping, grinding or even eating, and use the bottom for storage.
Storage
There is no limit to the amount of storage you require in a kitchen. In fact, the larger the kitchen and storage space, you can be sure that this will translate into more items in the kitchen to use up all the storage! So plan ahead and anticipate an increase in the amount of storage space required.
Let the shelves be simple and straight. Don't opt for anything very ornate if you have a small kitchen. If you have a larger space, you can experiment.
Display
Infuse warmth into the space by adding a few paintings into the kitchen. The kitchen is an ideal place to hold paintings, pictures and photographs of vegetables and fruits, especially bright ones like tomatoes, oranges and so on.
Use crockery for display as well as for eating. If you have glass shelves in your kitchen, you can place the crockery in such a manner so it looks appealing. Alternatively, if you are short of space in the kitchen, store expensive crockery in a glass showcase outside the kitchen. Serving bowls, a tea set or even a set of spoons can serve as great decoration items, within or outside the kitchen. Be creative!
