Gifts Galore
The joy of giving is greater than the joy of receiving. Read on for tips on choosing the ideal gift.
Giving gifts is an art by itself. The gift should be appropriate and to the taste of the person you are buying it for. The market is flooded with gift shops and one finds it difficult to choose from the vast collection of items. Here are some tips to help you choose the ideal gift.
Age matters
The age of the person for whom you are planning to buy a gift plays a major role in the selection of the gift. If it is a toddler who is just learning to walk, you could pick up a walker or a swing.
If the child is in the age group of five to ten, then instead of buying board games, go in for an architect set or a doctor's set. An alarm clock that chimes sweetly is just right for a school going kid, and you can be sure that the child and her mother will think of you every morning. An annual subscription to a child's magazine is also a good idea, as this will encourage reading. A stamp book or potted plant could awake a new interest in the child.
Instead of gifting a friend a shirt, consider buying a couple of tickets to a concert - after checking with your friend if he will be free to attend, of course.
Don't forget the people that work for you
Festivals provide an opportunity for us to show our appreciation to those that work for us, like household help, the gardener, the chauffeur and so on. It is they who would appreciate it most. A raincoat, school bags for their children or an umbrella would be well appreciated and will motivate them to work for you loyally for a number of years.
Ingenious gifts
Be creative when giving gifts. Although it is tempting to visit the nearby store and pick up the first thing within our budget, this is not always the best idea - especially if you are buying gifts for someone close. I recently received a desktop calendar with photographs of our children during the various stages of their life! The idea was absolutely wonderful, and this is a gift I will treasure for years to come.
Flowers and fruits
A fruit basket would be ideal for the fitness freaks. A pack of dry fruits may not seem very personal, but it is definitely useful and lasts for a long time.
Cash and gift cheques
Some feel that cash is the best gift, since the recipient can buy whatever he wants with it. A gift voucher also serves the same purpose. Nowadays even sweet shops offer gift vouchers and these can be encashed as and when the person needs it.
A gift for you
Last but not the least is a gift for you. Go ahead and buy that expensive perfume you had been eyeing for a long time. You deserve it!
Remember:
Keep the bill safe, so the item can be exchanged if necessary.
Never forget to thank the giver. There is nothing as charming as a hand-written 'thank you' note. Train your children to write thank-you notes, to thank everyone for their birthday presents.
Wrap the present well. Packaging plays as important a role as the product itself!
