FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (Weight management)
Question 1 I am overweight by 10-12 kgs, but am absolutely hale and hearty without any health problems at all. Do you think there is any need for me to reduce my weight? (Mohit Ahlawat)
Answer 1 Yes, there is. I realize that it can be difficult to get motivated to start a plan which asks us to wake up early to go for walks or sets a dietary discipline in our carefree lives! And you are not alone who wish to wait for the diseases to strike before taking action. I am sure you understand that being overweight today may pose greater risk to disorders like diabetes, heart diseases, and liver problems in future. And that just losing 10% of your current weight can not only reduce your risk to diseases but also make a huge difference in the way you feel on a daily basis. Trying to lose weight does not essentially equate to eating less or depriving yourself of your favorite foods. Nor does it mean being on crash diets that never work or extreme exercise regimen that results in injuries or spending bunch of rupees on plans which often end without much success. Being on your ideal weight is the first stepping stone towards a lifetime of good health, even if you don’t have any major health concerns today. So my advice would be to take the plunge and learn the healthy way to losing weight. Trust us to show you that losing weight is not as hard, as you thought it to be...!
Question 2 Which is better for losing weight: cutting calories or increasing exercise? I recently read that if you have to choose, diet is better. (Shwetangana S)
Answer 2 The golden rule for losing weight is to burn more calories than you eat. While eating correctly and not necessarily less is important, it is equally important to be able to burn what you have eaten through regular exercise. Also, it can be tough to create a calorie deficit by diet alone. You don’t need to necessarily spend hours in gym or join aerobic classes. Going for 40 minutes of brisk walk or spot marching, at least 4-6 times a week is good enough. The formula for effective wt. loss is to be diet wise but to be also active.
Question 3 I have been on numerous weight loss plans and have even lost weight during the course. But I always gain back the lost weight, the moment I start on my regular eating pattern? (Rashmi B)
Answer 3 Rebound weight gain is common, if you go on a crash diets or suddenly stop exercising. It is important to continue eating high quality foods such as sprouts, juices and whole grains and also follow a regular exercise routine, even after achieving your desired weight. Going back to eating refined, starchy and fried foods or discontinuing your walks/exercises can most definitely lead to rebound weight gain. Losing once will not be able to provide a shield against any future weight problems. Therefore, it becomes important to follow a wt. loss plan that can be easily adapted to your present lifestyle, sets realistic weight loss goals, includes regular physical activity and guides you on your transition from restricted wt. loss diet to your regular diet.
Question 4 I am 32 yrs old, but my weight is only 48kgs (5’6”). I do not feel hungry and eating heavy meals lead to hyperacidity. Could you tell me what diet I should follow to reduce acidity and gain weight? (Arnav B)
Answer 4 It is evident from your profile that you need to improve your digestive functions and detoxify your body. The first step would be to counter your hyperacidity by switching over to alkaline food like fresh fruits, vegetables (like potatoes, dudhi, turi, etc) honey, raisins and strictly avoiding acid forming foods like alcohol, coffee, maida, non vegetarian foods, fried food, dried coconut, soft drinks, pickles, etc. Avoid adding high fat junk foods to your diet just for the sake of more calories – remember it's the quality and the nutritional value of the calories that you want and not just the quantity. Eat plenty of starchy carbohydrates like potatoes, yams, beans, rice and oatmeal. Have small and frequent nutrient dense meals/ snacks(fruit juices, milk shakes, nuts, soybean, cheese, etc) and add herbs such as methi seeds, saunth to improve appetite.
