Back to Work

Thinking of getting back to work after a long break? It may not be easy. Read on.

Numerous women around the world quit their jobs after having children. They want and need to be around their children, and their children want and need to have their mothers with them. However, once children start school and get involved in their own activities, mothers often start getting restless and long to re-enter the work force.

Going back to a previous job

If you already had a job with an organization, consider approaching the management to find out if they would be interested in re-hiring you. More often than not, your position would have been filled by someone else and they may not have any job available for you at the moment. If they do take you back, it may be for a different position - perhaps junior to what you were expecting.

Not many mothers relish the thought of going back to an organization they have been out of for a few years. For one thing, folks who were junior to them may now very well be senior. However, if that doesn't bother you and you were happy there, it makes sense to give this a first shot.

Another organization

At times women try and apply for jobs at different organizations based on their past work experience and skills. They may then find that their skills have become outdated.

Call centers

Call centers have been the saviour of many women who want jobs, but do not have the necessary work experience. Since call centers often have in-house training, high skills prior to joining are not really required. You are however required to speak well, and are often required to have strong English. The good part about working in call centers is that the starting pay is relatively decent, and you can quickly get raises.

Disadvantages

There is limited scope for growth. Some people will definitely rise up the ladder, but there is not a lot of growth prospect for most of the others.

Workers are expected to work various shifts. So at times you may be required to get out at night and work until the next morning. This messes up your body clock, and your spouse may not appreciate the fact that he doesn't get to see you as much as he likes - since you may be working when he has a holiday. Shifts keep changing however, and you will definitely be able to spend time with your family every now and again.

If you are not looking for a full time career, and just want a job to keep you gainfully occupied and provide some additional money, this may be suitable for you. If you do well, salaries can go very high, providing you with an excellent income.

Doing a course

Once you've decided to get back to work, it may be very tempting to grab the first job offer that comes along - but this may not be the smartest decision, especially if you are thinking of building a career. Consider taking up a course, perhaps even earning a higher degree. It will then be far easier for you to get the job of your choice. Once you are in a course, you will be surrounded by like-minded students and professors that can help put you on the right path, making it easier for you to enter or re-enter the job market.
