The Gifted Child The definition of a gifted child Rahul is a shy, quiet boy in your class, whose unobtrusive presence often goes unnoticed. But Rahul is a person transformed, when he is on the stage. The shy, introverted Rahul is transmuted into an intense actor, giving depth and realness to a make believe character. Gayatri is an average student, barely managing to make the grade. But she has a special gift for computations and mathematical equations. The most complex problems are solved with ease and accuracy. And there is Sameer the most intelligent boy, the all rounder who excels in studies and games. These are what psychologists would call 'GIFTED CHILDREN'. Gifted children are those who possess abilities that give evidence of high performance capabilities in intellectual, creative, specific academic areas, leadership ability, or in the performing or visual arts. Typically gifted children have an extraordinary ability to exercise sensitive judgment for solving problems, to adapt to new situations, and to learn from new experiences. They also have an extraordinary memory and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. They have strong vivid imaginations, quick and fluent mental associations and a strong and powerful drive that often helps them overcome constraints. Gifted children are fluent, elaborate,
and original thinkers, often able to generate possibilities, consequences
and related ideas. They are bestowed with a sense of independence and purposefulness
and an exceptional dedication to their field of productivity.
Tapping the potential Exploring the full potential of the gifted child is a long and difficult process and often requires the encouragement and understanding of his parents and teachers. Very often these gifted children go unnoticed and undiscovered, to the extent that their exceptional talent is often submerged and forgotten. These exceptional children often end up being underachievers, as they are unable to realize their potential. One of the most important persons in discovering and nurturing the gifted child is the teacher. Teachers are among the first people to discover these hidden, often seemingly innocuous talents and qualities in children and often prove to be the stepping stones to glory and greatness. It is the teachers who are able to inspire the belief and confidence in the child about his exceptional ability or gift. It is only through their understanding, guidance, motivation and encouragement that children realize their immense worth and are able to channelize it to greater heights. Gifted children are precious. They are endowed with special abilities that need to be nurtured. Gifted children are a resource…not just of a school or a community but of a country… Just imagine if Ramakant Achrekar had not noticed the immensely talented, little boy, India would not have had the great legend called Sachin Tendulkar! ! ! So parents, if you think you have a gifted child, provide him all the encouragement and support so that he achieves his fullest potential. Next week, we will provide some more information on gifted children. To add your views on this article or read others comments Click Here
