Of course, I think it is the best teaching that one can give to a young person. I know it is not fashionable to talk of secularism to ones' children, but i have stuck my values which grant equal status to all castes, religions etc.

One does not know about these things as we are pretty politically disconnected. I think no special effort has to be made for such values in families which live anyway live an insular existence.

It has not been my concern so far. I feel it may complicate my child's simple mind. I think such things can be taught only later in life.

I think secular values can be a lifetime gift. These values can see anyone through in life. Otherwise, children grow up to be monstrous adults and are tolerant towards fellow human beings of other castes, religions.

Comment:
We have settled in Dubai for the last seven years. But, we are constantly in touch with India. We want to know more over there. Whenever, we put on the Indian news, we come to know of some riots, communal massacre, rampage etc. A true secular mind can only put an end to this. I wish secularism was a specific subject in today's India.

I feel very strongly about secular values. I think it is very necessary for today's children to understand the cultural mosaic in the right context. They should not be prejudiced in any particular manner. They should be truly secular.

We, here living in Canada, do not think it necessary to instil any such values. The child does not know much about the religious and linguistic diferences. I may think of injecting these values only in a typically Indian situation.

I have not thought on these lines. But, now that I have got this idea from Indiaparenting.com, I better start injecting the right values from the beginning. I too believe that a child must not be concious of his/her caste, language, religion and race at a young age. He must just know his origins, but that should not be his primary concern.

Of course, I feel very strongly about secular values. The child must be given a clear, true, secular mindset from his early years. Only in this fashion, we can save India from becoming religiously and reginally fundamentalistic.
