I was eager to find out the sex of my child so I could do some "streamlined" planning and decorating. I wanted everything to be just perfect since it was my "once in a lifetime"! But as my husband and his family desperately wnated a girl and I wnated only 1 child, he got some time to reconcile to the fact that we would be having a boy and not a girl. It is very unfortunate that in a progressive society, we still give importance to the birth of a boy, for reasons such as 'carrying forward the family name' and, most importantly, the onus that a girl child carries of giving a dowry when she marries. Although we pride ourselves as being educated, this dowry system still goes on in the affluent cadre of society, though for them it is just a way of life and not 'selling the bride'. This terminology only sounds appropriate amongst the poor and uneducated class of our Asian society. So you can't really blame them if they ask for a scan to know what the sex of the unborn child is. But for us, who are able to understand God's creation in a different context, I seriously think that we should let Him unfold his creation as a surprise! Afterall, will it make any difference. The technique is meant to ensure that the baby is growing properly and not for such silly things. We waited for full nine months in case of both of our childs, a boy and a girl. And yes, we were very much happy to call our baby a 'baby' for those nine months.
