How to fight a sweet tooth?


Excessive sugar intake can be harmful for your health. Here are some powerful tips to fight a sweet tooth.


"What is the sweet dish?" asked Rahul after finishing his dinner. It is like a ritual to have a sweet dish after every meal in most Indian families. It is next to impossible to turn a blind eye to sugar cravings. We are fully aware of the number of calories we are consuming, but it is hard to console the mind. It is hard to stop munching over the food that is satisfying your taste buds. As they say forbidden food is the sweetest. But is it that hard to fight a sweet tooth?

What do you think of when you hear the word sugar? Perhaps you think of a chocolate cake or a sweet-round gulabjamun. Do you think of calories? Do you imagine yourself getting fat? Sugar has lot of calories and almost zero nutrition. When we consume sugar in the forms of sweets and deserts, we add up even more calories, and saturated and trans fats. It is okay to treat your sweet tooth once in a while, but you have to make sure that it does not turn into a habit.

What does it mean when you say that someone has a sweet tooth? Having a sweet tooth indicates the fondness for foods that are sweet. With certain tactics one can surely overcome his cravings for sweet food. Here are a few ideas which will help you battling with a sweet tooth.


Dump high calorie sweets

Do not store any high calorie food stuffs at your home. Get rid of stored sweets from refrigerators and cabinets. With all your courage chuck the candies and colas you have accumulated. Yearning for a particular food will end up in consumption if the food is at hand’s reach. The calories stored in your house will soon get stored on your body, if you do not get done with them.


Find alternatives

Sugar is an appetite stimulator. The more you will eat, the more you will yearn for. The best way to keep your sugar addiction in control is by finding other food alternatives. Whenever you feel an irresistible urge to eat something sweet, grab a healthy alternative. You can substitute a soft drink with a fresh fruit juice, which can be the healthy substitute. Reduce or cut off the sugar intake and be ready to witness numerous health benefits.


Ignore cravings

Do not give any importance to your food cravings. Do not spoil your sweet tooth. Are you longing to eat something sweet, like some mouth-watering brownies or an ice-cream? Crumble that thought at once and throw it out of your mind. Go and take a long walk, watch something interesting on television or read a magazine till the thought of food goes out of your mind.


Get company

You are less likely to control your food cravings if your family members are splurging on food in front of you. Why not to have a company while battling with your sweet tooth? Get hold of a friend or a sibling and together fight your respective sweet teeth. Getting someone’s company will surely encourage you to keep your food cravings under control.


Treat yourself

Have you been successful in controlling your food cravings? You deserve a pat on your back. Set a goal. If you are successful in keeping sweets away for a particular time then reward yourself for your achievement. May be a great body massage at the spa or a quick shopping will boost you even further to fight a sweet tooth.

  • Avoid skipping meals, this may save you from eating too many sweets at one go

  • Wait until the food craving goes away

  • Ask someone to keep track of how much sweet you consume

  • Make sure you are getting adequate and sound sleep

  • Pop a mint in your mouth whenever you get that craving to eat something sugary


Sweets are irresistible but overindulgence is harmful for your health. Avoid buying and storing sweets at home. It will be your first step towards healthy lifestyle. Losing some kilos will not be difficult once you learn to control food cravings. It is necessary to discipline your sweet tooth. You have to fight a sweet tooth.
