in the machine, a site to see
Grandmothers have always been regarded storehouses of knowledge when it comes to parenting, a fact much ignored in today's world of nuclear families. Now, however, there are attempts to reinstate the grandmother in her vital role, but via technology. In the form of a website called IndiaParenting.com. The site provides a comprehensive guide for Indian parents around the world, being a veritable storehouse of health information on pregnancy, newborn care, developmental milestones, common childhood illnesses and more. An entire section is devoted to health issues of women past their 'prime' and for those who cannot conceive. Ms. Nirali Sanghi conceived the idea during her pregnancy in 1998, while browsing through the net for information on parenting. "Surprisingly, although there were many sites on parenting, none of them catered to the complications faced by a pregnant Indian woman. One has to understand the body structure of a Indian woman is different from the western woman. So the diet, the type of food prescribed for a pregnant western woman will not suit the Indian woman. This made me feel the need to start a website to help Indian parents living away from their relatives." IndiaParenting.com has a panel consisting of gynaecologists, paediatricians, speech pathologists whom the more bashful can approach for guidance. The site also gives information on the traditional practices of newborn care, home remedies and customs of Godh bharna, Mundan and Naamkaran. The site also helps parents teach their children Indian traditions, nursery rhymes in various Indian languages with select audio clips and prayers of different religions. Also provided are party games, movie reviews, baby photo contests, horoscopes, numerology and over 2000 baby names along with their meanings. While most
sites launch with 100 - 200 pages, this site has over 1,800 pages all of
which has been developed in house.
