Silicon India - December 99
NIRALI SANGHI
I received my bachelors in Economics and Computer Science from Barnard College, Columbia University in 1989 and an MBA in Finance and Marketing from Columbia University in 1992. Between BA and MBA worked at Baring Brothers in M&A group. Post MBA, spent three years in Citibank's Credit Card Marketing Strategy Group as an Asst. VP. After spending 9 years in the US, moved to India in 1995 and joined The Boston Consulting Group's Bombay office. Left BCG last year, incorporated a company called DataMagic Websolutions and started work on IndiaParenting.com. After 22 man-months of development, launched the site in May of this year. I had always wanted to start my own business, and having a baby just seemed like a logical time for a change in careers - from the corporate world to the Internet world. When I was going to have a baby and was browsing the net for information, I didn't find a single site specifically for Indians, that's when the idea of indiaparenting.com hit me. Although I had very long hours, and a lot of travel and stress at BCG, running your own show is a different ball game. I often put in 14- hour days and work doesn't end when you come home. It's helpful to have support of family during these times. The infrastructure
for business in India is definitely improving. For instance, until a couple
of years ago, you wouldn't be able to get through to VSNL. Now VSNL has
multiple lines that allow you to really take off. One of the reasons is
that corporates are just waking up to the internet, but not yet seeing
it as another distribution channel.
