How to Prevent Thrombosis during Pregnancy?

As all other discomforts caused during pregnancy, the pregnant women are more likely to get thrombosis during pregnancy. Thrombosis is nothing but a blood clot seen in the vein. Thrombosis or the DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) should be treated properly. Otherwise it may even lead to death. Generally pregnant women are at higher risk of getting affected by thrombosis rather than normal women.

Symptoms of Thrombosis in Pregnant Women

Most of the pregnant women are worried about getting affected by thrombosis during pregnancy. Chances of getting affected by thrombosis can be easily detected by some of the important symptoms such as swelling, pain, and redness in the legs or toes, moderate to severe back pain, and chest pain. When pregnant women come across such symptoms in their body, it is better to take immediate medical treatment as these symptoms may be due to the blood clots in the legs or heart or lung area of the body of the pregnant women.

Why is Thrombosis very Common in Pregnant Women?

One of the most important reasons for blood clots seen in pregnant women is due to the obesity. Overweight and growing uterus and foetus put on excessive pressure on the veins leading to thrombosis. Smoking also leads to thrombosis in pregnant women. So it is important to avoid smoking during pregnancy. This also includes passive smoking.
Pregnant women face several discomforts such as mood swings, sleeplessness, etc. due to the hormonal changes occurring during pregnancy. Similarly, even thrombosis or DVT is induced due to the hormonal changes occurring during pregnancy. Estrogen which is generated in high quantities during pregnancy is one of the reasons for the thrombosis seen in pregnant women.

Ways to Prevent Thrombosis in Pregnancy

Pregnant women can come out of the risk of getting affected by thrombosis by following certain simple steps. It is always good to take a walk now and then without continuously sitting. Even the working professionals whose profession insists them to sit or stand for a longer duration of time should avoid sitting or standing in a place for a longer duration of time. Instead, they should move here and there once in a while to prevent thrombosis. Consuming lot of water would help the pregnant women prevent thrombosis.

Medical Treatment for Thrombosis Occurring during Pregnancy

DVT or thrombosis in pregnant women can be identified easily by the medical practitioners through an ultrasound. Thrombosis when treated properly can easily be removed. Generally the doctors prescribe safer anticoagulants for treating thrombosis occurring during pregnancy. These blood thinners help combat thrombosis that is common in pregnant women. The dosages are gradually lowered and finally lowered to the level of preventive dosage in pregnant women affected due to thrombosis.
However, it may not be safe to take any medicines which are not prescribed by doctor during pregnancy. So, make sure that you only follow the advice of your doctor for dealing with thrombosis safely.

Using Compression Stockings to Fight Thrombosis in Pregnancy

When there is a definite symptom of swelling or pain in the extremities, it is advisable to use compression stockings after consulting a doctor. This helps to increase the flow of blood in pregnant women. This eliminates or reduces the risk of getting affected by thrombosis.
Though thrombosis is a serious problem to be addressed, it does not affect all the pregnant women. Only few pregnant women get affected due to DVT. Even those pregnant women who have the symptoms of getting affected by thrombosis or have past history of thrombosis or hereditary history of thrombosis can easily combat thrombosis by taking proper treatment through a medical practitioner.
Prevention is always better than cure. So it is better to take proper diet, avoid gaining excessive weight, and perform the required exercises under the supervision of a certified trainer or walking regularly in the prescribed way, which would help the pregnant women come out of the risk of getting affected due to thrombosis.
