The Independence Day of India (15th August)

The Independence Day of India (15th August)

India got freedom from British rule on 15th August 1947. Read on to know more about India’s Independence Day.

India attained freedom from the British Rule on 15 August 1947 which is celebrated as the Independence Day throughout the nation. The Independence Day of any country is a moment of great pride and grandeur. Even if we are engrossed with our professional and personal lives for the rest of the year, on this specific day, each citizen of the country does spend some time pondering on his or her contribution to the country.

This is the very attitude that makes the Independence Day special. We take time out to remember the freedom fighters who had laid down their lives for the freedom of this nation. It was an oppressive period when India was ruled by the British.

15th August - The Independence Day

15th August is marked as an occasion when not only the freedom fighters ought to be remembered, but we also need to think whether we are doing justice to what they have attained for us. We live in a free country and are privileged enough to breath the free in the free air of a free nation. But, there is also a fact that cannot be overlooked that we are still far from calling ourselves completely free.

What it Means to Live in a Free Nation?

Freedom not only means living in a country that is governed by your own people. It also means that the citizens of the nation are free to live a dignified life with all amenities that are basic for human existence. There ought to be freedom of choice, expression and endeavour. This is exactly where India seems to lack in the present times. We are still plagued by numerous social evils, political malpractices and infringement of human rights.

Respecting the Freedom

India is considered as a developing country and that means that theoretically we still have a lot more to achieve. But a true tribute to the nation can only be offered when each citizen is aware of his or her rights and is able to live with dignity in a free land. Theories have long governed us. It is time to fulfill the vision of our freedom fighter leaders and the common people who have laid their lives in order to gift us this freedom that we tend to take for granted more often than not, sometimes unconsciously and sometimes quite consciously.

The solution to this is very simple. Instead of spending time pondering, or brooding as to what went wrong and who wronged whom, it is best to dedicate to one’s duties as a citizen of this nation. A country is comprised of people, and when each individual realises his responsibilities towards his country and dedicates his life towards its development, a country becomes a nation, which is an all encompassing entity that breaths life. A life of glory and success and where every citizen lives with joy, helping civilisation to grow and prosper. This is not much to dream of, is it?

Independence Day Celebration

When we talk about Independence Day celebrated on 15th August, these are the words of Jawahar Lal Nehru that keep reverberating in our ears: “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.”

Celebrating Independence Day is not only about hoisting the flag and singing patriotic songs. The essence of the Indepenece Day celebration is lies in remembering all the freedom fighters who laid their lives without any other thought but for the country. Respecting the freedom which we got at the cost of the lives of these freedom fighters is of utmost importance. Not only on the Independence Day but also on each day of our life we should learn to respect the value of the freedom and should not take freedom for granted by leading a life as a responsible citizen.
