Teaching Importance of Truth and Honesty to Children

Teaching Importance of Truth and Honesty to Children
Teaching values like truthfulness and honesty to children is very important to shape their character. Here is how you can inculcate values like truthfulness and honesty in children.
Teaching morals and developing good habits in children is not an easy task as they live in their own world of fantasies. Making children follow values like honesty throughout the life is not easy. But it is possible to make them understand the importance of truth and honesty. Parents are responsible to educate the children on how and why they should be honest.
Children should imbibe an attitude that is required to distinguish between many important factors. Hence, respecting their mind's astuteness is necessary because they continue their thinking, learning and knowing the new world effortlessly and sensibly without any struggles. True relationship between the children and parents must be extremely robust. Only this kind of relationship enables to inculcate all the moral beliefs, behaviours, values and honesty in them.

1. Truthful Home

Children begin to learn every good habit and behaviour from home. The family members are the best role model for children and they do follow their actions. When children notice the little lies from parents, they feel that little white lies are acceptable and the same will be followed by them. Imagine of saying on a call “I am not at home, can you call me back after an hour?” when you are at home, especially in front of your child. Telling lies will be taken for granted by children and eventually they will start lying for bigger things. It is parent’s duty to explain the importance of truth to children and explain them how the things get affected when the truth is hidden.

2. Avoid Giving Opportunities

Avoid creating opportunities for the children to lie. Do not put forward the questions for which they may lie or hide the truth. Try to build up genuine situations all the time at home. Make them realize that only honesty will help in tackling all the issues in life. Such teachings during childhood will always be fixed in their minds and they will follow it forever.

3. React Smart When Children Lie

It is always better to correct the children when he or she lies. Provoke and let them know that the lies are disappointing. Any child is not born with the attitude of telling lies all the time. Children with a conscience will realize the importance of truth when parents point out their mistake and punish them constructively in order to make them feel regretful. The punishment given by others for the children for telling lies differs based on the situations.

4. Truthful Self is Good

Convince the child by saying “I like the way you are”. This kind of words will convince them to act truly in any situation. Children who are accepted with their behaviour at home are expected to give truth all the time. But along with showing the acceptance by showering love and care on them, their misbehaviour must be correct from time-to-time. Otherwise, they will have an impression that they will accepted even if they keep on doing mistakes. There must a set of rules and regulations which should be followed by the entire family.

5. Stop Labelling

When children lie for a specific reason or purpose avoid labelling them as liars. This kind of an approach will lead them to a negative path and they will become adamant. As a solution, explain how that label will affect their schoolings when called by friends or neighbours. Teaching honesty is the right way instead of sticking a label like “You are a liar”.

6. Build Expectations

Children should know that the parents always expect truth from them and to be honest throughout their life. When the child is aware of the expectations, they will step out to work for the truth and result in truthful behaviour. Have direct conversation with children to explain the prospects and never fleece the requirements.
When a truthful atmosphere is created at home, honesty will routinely get developed in children. Educate the importance of the proverb “Honesty is the best policy”.

How to teach the importance of telling truth to children? What to do if a child is telling lies frequently? How to inculcate honesty and truthful behaviour in children? Discuss here.

We should never label children, in fact we should help them to identify difference between what is right and what is wrong.
