Maintain a Clean Surrounding
Mosquitoes breed in unhygienic surroundings or living conditions and they lay eggs in water. Hence, do not allow water to stagnate in or around your house. Change the water in your bird bath, flower vase or water fountain in your garden regularly. Do not keep water in pots or buckets uncovered. Always cover them. Garbage should not be made to pile up. Dispose them regularly. Garbage bins should have lids.Clear off the rotten vegetables or waste in your kitchen.
Proper Clothing
Make your child wear full sleeves, full pants or stockings. When they go out to play ensure that they are wearing socks and shoes and are covered properly. Clothes dark in colour attract
mosquitoes very easily. Make them wear clothes that are light in color. Permethrin is a very effective and long lasting mosquito repellent which can be used to treat on the clothes. You must consult your child’s paediatrician before using any mosquito repellent on your child. Ensure that your child wears light weight cotton clothes for easy passage of air and skin to breathe.
Use of Mosquito Repellents
Apply skin repellent ointments on the exposed parts of your child’s skin especially when they go to school or go out to play. Oil of leaves from lemon eucalyptus trees is also known to be a good
mosquito repellent which can be sprayed near the windows and doors and also used as lotion to be applied on the body. Fragrance of the oil will keep the mosquitoes away. You may also use no-smoke mosquito coils, mosquito traps or sprays. But make sure that these are child-friendly and be careful while using the spray so that your child does not inhale it. Nowadays, colourful and attractive mosquito repellent wrist bands are available for kids in the market. Your child will love to wear them. However, make sure that you consult a paediatrician before using such products on your child.
Protect Your House
Put wire mesh or screens on all the windows, doors and vents of your house so that the mosquitoes do not enter your house. The mesh should be replaced immediately in case of any holes. Keep the doors and windows closed during peak hours, which is usually the daytime. You may install air conditioners. Always use mosquito bed-nets while sleeping. Ensure regular wash of the bed nets.Check for any gaps, cracks, or holes in the walls which must be repaired immediately.
Keep Your Child Clean and Dry
Humidity and sweat attracts mosquitoes. Keeping the skin clean and dry is very important. You should always make sure to wipe away the sweat from your child’s body as soon as he or she comes back from play and apply body powder so as to keep him or her dry. Keep your child cool and clean always.
Dengue is preventable. It is always better to prevent the child from getting this disease. Sometimes if dengue is not treated on time it may even lead to Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever or DHF resulting in failure of the liver, bleeding and finally death.
