Helping Child to Combat Peer Pressure

Helping Child to Combat Peer Pressure

With parent’s support is vital for a teenager to deal with peer pressure. Here are some parenting tips for helping teenagers combat peer pressure.

Adolescence or teenage is an impressionable phase in an individual’s life. Peer pressure gets enhanced due to tender age and the inability to resist. The child ends up feeling confused as he or she suffers identity crises and becomes unsure what she or he really wants from life. It is an unfortunate situation when this phase gets prolonged as it renders a deep impact on the future professional and personal life as well. It is therefore important to combat peer pressure at the earliest so that the self confidence of the kid does not get eroded and he does not risk his physical and mental well-being due to it.

Tips for Helping Child to Combat Peer Pressure

Here are a few ways through which one can go ahead with this combat exercise.

Boost His or Her Confidence

This is an oft repeated tip, but nonetheless the most effective. It has been the best possible method to counter peer pressure in a successful manner. If you note around you will find that there are a section of people who set norms and other follow them willingly. The self-confidence of the said person is at play here; he knows what he is doing and imposes rules likewise. They are self assured and confident. This combination is a magnet that pulls people towards them and they are considered as natural leaders. So once a kid is helped to understand how important it is to be confident, the urge to ‘fit in’ will gradually subside.

Help The Kid Make Informed Choices

Explain to the kid that there are a lot of choices that he has to make in his life; and a choice is an action that is followed by certain consequences. Be casual but logical in your approach. You need to be starkly factual when you make the kid aware on both positives and negatives of the available choices. Once the situation is clear in the mind of the kid he will be equipped to make decisions that will benefit him. He will know where the benefit lies and whether it is desirable or not.

This way he can readily combat negative peer pressure and you can also encourage the child to make his own decisions. Tell him that he has the complete right to do what is good for him and should not allow anyone else to dictate on the influence his choices. This also includes choosing friends with care. Teach your child that one’s peer group should ideally comprise of people who share similar values and ideals and have common goals in life. Combating peer pressure would be incredibly smooth this way.

Help Him Develop Mental Toughness

This does not happen overnight. It is an exercise that needs to be practiced from an early age. As a parent it is important to condition the child in such a way that he learns failure is not the end of life. He should be easy with both success and failure, but at the same time be aware that it is important to carve a niche for oneself and performance counts in the long run.

There is temptations galore but it requires strength of character to decline anything that he knows is not right. Instead of being boringly preachy, it works better if you place the matter in a way that anything is bad that is not desirable and harmful. This way they will be better able to resist peer pressure.
